When I go to Chiang Mai by sleeper train, I prefer to take the No.9 as it uses the newer Chinese made carriages and is more comfortable. The toilets are better and each berth has charging outlets/reading lights. 2nd Class is fine but you can charter a 1st Class cabin for ฿2,453.
There are two sleeper trains to Chiang Mai. The No.9 departs at 6:10pm and No.13 at 7:35pm.
