Over the next four days, four inmates in four states are scheduled to be put to death – a cluster that, while not abnormal – comes amid a national uptick in executions as President Donald Trump calls...

“The death penalty remains unpopular and practiced by a very small number of states. In those states, you see an increased willingness to do whatever it takes to carry out executions. The result is we’re more likely to see executions go wrong.” https://t.co/2SYjngegJ6

4/6 - In Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦- The use of the death penalty is escalating at record rates, with child defendants in the Gulf Kingdom still at risk of execution, despite a Royal decree supposedly ending the death penalty for childhood crimes in 2020.

2/6 - In North East Syria – men, women and children remain unlawfully detained in camps and prisons, with many abandoned by their governments and left to live in life-threatening and inhumane conditions. They have not been charged with a crime, making their detention unlawful.

1/6 - Holding these leaders accountable extends to the🇬🇧. Brits with foreign ties can have their citizenship taken by the UK Government. It creates a 2-tier citizenship regime that discriminates against ethnic minorities & those with foreign heritage; it's fundamentally racist.

Right now, across the globe, heads of state are increasingly disregarding international law and ignoring human rights. But we won’t let the abuse of state power erase human rights – we'll continue fighting injustice 👊 – 🧵

Reprieve US analysed every botched lethal injection execution in the modern era. Our report found that racial disparities in US capital punishment extend into the execution chamber, with Black prisoners twice as likely to suffer a botched execution. https://t.co/wibnDdLJAS

The 37 people spared today only represent a small percentage of the total death row population in the US, but by commuting their sentences, the Biden administration has put down a marker in the long, slow decline of this outdated punishment.

In 2024, a handful of officials in a handful of states pressed ahead with plans to kill at all costs, often torturing condemned prisoners in the process. America’s death penalty system is profoundly broken, and executing states are resorting to ever more secrecy to hide it.

These commutations cap a troubling year of executions in the US with a moment of common sense. The death penalty is a costly, ineffective punishment that merely perpetuates a cycle of violence 🧵

3/6 - How does it work? Detainees do not need to have previously been a Reprieve client. The programme supports their efforts to rebuild their lives after detention, either in their home or host countries. But most importantly, we remain a lifeline ☎️

2/6 Created in 2009, our initiative recognises that the challenges caused by Guantánamo do not end upon release. We work with clients from their detention through to their resettlement or repatriation. Once cleared for release, anyone leaving Guantánamo can be eligible for LAG.
