2/6 - In North East Syria – men, women and children remain unlawfully detained in camps and prisons, with many abandoned by their governments and left to live in life-threatening and inhumane conditions. They have not been charged with a crime, making their detention unlawful.

The 37 people spared today only represent a small percentage of the total death row population in the US, but by commuting their sentences, the Biden administration has put down a marker in the long, slow decline of this outdated punishment.

In 2024, a handful of officials in a handful of states pressed ahead with plans to kill at all costs, often torturing condemned prisoners in the process. America’s death penalty system is profoundly broken, and executing states are resorting to ever more secrecy to hide it.
