As Marshall Warren’s college hockey career comes to a close with

Michigan beats North Dakota 4-3 to advance to the regional finals and face Michigan State yet again. A dominant third period won the Wolverines the game.

prospect Gavin Brindley missed the first day of World Junior camp after his grandfather suddenly passed. Yesterday, he took to the ice with some added motivation, and flashed his speed and skating skills.
My story for
@theblockm
:
Dylan Duke with a solo effort gets a goal and seconds later Gavin Brindley scores off a beautiful feed from Frank Nazar III. Michigan now with a 4-2 lead.
The
@theblockm
’s hockey beat has poured our all into covering
@umichhockey
this season and would like the opportunity to continue our work at the Frozen Four. Please read this thread and help us being attention to this!
I am one of four student journalists on
@theblockm
’s hockey beat. We have covered and traveled to every single
@umichhockey
game this season.
But when we tried to get credentials for the Frozen Four, we were told by
@NCAAIceHockey
that there were only two available seats. 🧵
To wrap up women’s month, The Daily’s all-female hockey beat did our best to put into words what these last eight months have meant to us. We’ve supported each other and built a beautiful friendship that will extend far beyond this season.
Michigan coach Brandon Naurato “tweaked” his forward lines with five minutes left in the second period against North Dakota. Dylan Duke, T.J. Hughes and Garrett Schifsky took full advantage, taking over the third period with three combined goals.
Bonnie Tholl’s career with
@umichsoftball
has spanned decades of success. Her unwavering loyalty to Michigan led to her promotion to head coach this year, a position she has worked toward her entire life.
On Bonnie’s journey, my feature for

UPDATE: We have officially been granted two more credentials by the NCAA! Another HUGE thank you to every single person that has supported us and advocated for us. We are so incredibly grateful and we couldn’t have done it without you! See you in St. Paul!
First
@umichhockey
player to turn pro this year. Michigan coach Brandon Naurato seemed pretty confident a number of guys were coming back, but Nazar will not be one of them.
Excited to be covering
@umichsoftball
for
@theblockm
this season. First story of the year will get you updated on the Wolverines’ new pitching lineup after losing key pieces in the offseason.
Michigan wins 6-4. Major props to the Wolverines for hanging on and sticking together amid all the scary injuries tonight. I bet almost no one in this building is thinking about the final score as much as hoping for the best for their teammates
Michigan State takes a penalty with 2:28 left. Dylan Duke scores a few seconds into the power play and all but ices the game. Second of the night and fourth of the regional for Duke. 5-2 Michigan
Marshall Warren is signing with the New York Islanders starting in the 2024-25 season. He played his final college season at Michigan and made an impact on and off the ice. The Islanders are his hometown team.
Michigan’s season ends at the hand of Boston College, 4-0. This is the first time Michigan has been shutout in the Frozen Four in program history. A dramatic postseason run for the Wolverines, but BC was clearly the better team.
Ironically, my final story on the Michigan hockey beat is about Boston College. The Eagles’ young studs came to play, and the Wolverines couldn’t keep up.

Frank Nazar III puts Michigan on the board and ties it up. He had two goals in the Big Ten Championship loss to MSU last week. Hitting his stride at the right time it seems.
Michigan down 1-0 after the first. Not a bad period of play for the Wolverines. The unsuccessful challenge on MSU’s goal hurt them, and they failed to capitalize on the power play. Physical as expected and pretty even shot count. Michigan will start the second on the power play.
Michigan softball player Kaylee America Rodriguez has been away from the team while battling cancer, but surprised her teammates in Florida over the weekend. More on her impact on the team and what her visit meant to her softball sisters:
Here in Plymouth for day 2 of USA World Junior camp.
#GoJetsGo
prospect Rutger McGroarty once again in the red non contact jersey.
#CBJ
prospect Gavin Brindley also here today.
First game day on the job covering
@umichhockey
for
@theblockm
. Lines looking a little different than expected with transfer Eernisse starting on the top line and Edwards a non-dresser. Grad transfer Barczewski gets the start in goal.
Here in Plymouth where Michigan is preparing to play USNTDP without its four World Juniors members. Everyone else healthy is dressed, including Ethan Edwards, who is playing his first game this season. Mark Estapa also making his return from injury.
J.J. McCarthy on the emotions of starting his pro career:
“It's a dream come true. Everything I've been working for since I was in fifth grade when I started editing my life to be in the position I'm in today.“
Currently en route to Amherst for
@umichhockey
’s series against UMass. Ahead of the matchup I spoke to

, about everything Michigan fans need to know about the Minutemen. Read our conversation here:
Mark Estapa takes his first penalty of the year and the children of yost have brought back the “free estapa” chants. Estapa was one of the most penalized players in college hockey last year but managed to turn things around late.
With a redemption victory over

in the

Regional Final,
@umichhockey
has advanced to the Frozen Four for the third consecutive year.
This week’s
#SportsTuesday
cover: The Empire Strikes Back.
Michigan has had an insane amount of good chances with plenty of shots and time of possession. But Boston College is the only team that has scored in the period. 4-0 Eagles with 13 min left
Dylan Duke scores from T.J. Hughes and Garrett Schifsky. That line has been buzzing tonight and reaping the benefits. 4-2 Michigan and the third period has been all Wolverines.
Winning a gold medal yesterday at
#WorldJuniors
was the latest success of Frank Nazar III’s career. With an abundance of natural talent from a young age, he forged his career through the support of his family. And he plays every day to make them proud.
Zak Zinter speaks at Michigan’s pro day. After his leg injury in November says he has no pain and is cleared for all activity. Still working back up to full strength and planning to make a video in the coming weeks to send to NFL teams.
Lines for
@umichhockey
’s last game of the regular season against
@GopherHockey
. West starting in goal after Barczewski appeared to sustain an injury last night. Defensive pairings and offensive lines also mixed up. Michigan desperate for a win to keep its postseason hopes alive.
Michigan got the equalizer but not much else in the second period. Still pretty even shot count, and once again the Wolverines will start the next period on the power play. So far they’ve yet to score on the advantage and have hardly even managed to set up well.
Michigan down 1-0 to Boston College after the first. BC’s offense is playing as advertised — Will Smith scored the goal in the second minute off perfect feeds from his star linemates. Michigan starting to defend better though and is leading the shot count.
Michigan defeats Western Kentucky 5-2 in first game of the Saturday double header with some nice freshmen contributions. Lauren Derkowski cementing herself as Michigan’s reliable starter with another strong performance in the circle.
So excited to share this Faceoff edition to get you caught up on all things
@umichhockey
. Give it a read before puck drop against Providence this weekend.
Here in Columbus for
@umichsoftball
playing OSU. The 27 mph winds might be the death of us up here in the press area, but we’re in for a good rivalry game. By the end of this, Michigan and OSU may just decide to unite against the wind. Only time will tell.
Had a great time chatting with

beatmates about Michigan hockey! Be sure to check it out ahead of the Wolverines’ road trip to Madison this weekend
At Munn for the Big Ten Championship between
@umichhockey
and
@MSU_Hockey
. The Wolverines looking for a third-straight Big Ten title and the Spartans looking for their first in program history.
All four Michigan players invited to camp made the final cut. Rutger McGroarty still working through the process to be medically cleared but a lot of optimism around the team that he’ll be good to go.
Seamus Casey wins it in overtime for Michigan 6-5. Power play from regulation carried over and the Wolverines used the last seconds of it to put the game away. Minnesota challenged for a hand pass but was unsuccessful.
Estapa headed to the locker room after taking a couple hard hits. Took a couple laps during the media time out seemingly testing his leg before he left.
Despite
@umichhockey
missing Ethan Edwards for the first half of its season, the Wolverines still have depth and are confident defensively early in the season.
@RekhaLeonard
with more on Michigan’s blue line:
Lines for
@umichhockey
vs
@OhioStateMHKY
. Tyler Duke back in the lineup playing against his former team. A lot of movement in the offensive lines as Naurato continues to see what works.
With a 1st-year coach and dramatic roster changes, a rebuild was inevitable no matter how much Michigan softball wanted to avoid it. Sure, Bonnie Tholl should some blame, but that doesn’t mean she was the wrong choice for head coach.
Second period recap: Michigan started hot with Nazar’s goal but North Dakota retook the lead soon after. Michigan ended the second as sloppily as it started the first. Only down 2-1 but will need a big third period.
Michigan wins 10-0 behind huge offensive contributions across the board. LeBeau also solid in first Michigan start with 5 strikeouts, only allowing 1 hit along with 3 walks. Aiken came in to relieve and closed out the win with 3 straight outs, including 2 strikeouts.
Pretty sloppy first period from Michigan. The Wolverines only had two shots on goal until the final two minutes when they got a little something going and added two more. North Dakota did a good job of clogging the slot and intercepting passes. Michigan down 1-0
It’s happening again. Michigan held a 3-0 lead, and in the span of three minutes OSU has scored twice and brought the game within one. Michigan needs to regroup fast if it doesn’t want to blow another lead.
Dylan Duke scores from T.J. Hughes and Garrett Schifsky. That line has been buzzing tonight and reaping the benefits. 4-2 Michigan and the third period has been all Wolverines.
In Maryland Heights, Missouri for Michigan’s regional matchup with North Dakota. A Michigan win tonight would mean a rematch with Michigan State on Sunday. A tough matchup ahead first for the Wolverines, though.
Weird goal for the Wolverines, but they’ll take it. Dylan Duke had the shot but couldn’t get enough on it. Looked to deflect in off Schifsky. 2-2 early in the third
After a season-opener loss on Thursday,
@umichsoftball
regrouped and came away from the weekend series with 4 straight wins. Check out coverage of all the games here:
Michigan pulled it off in the end, but allowing the game to get to overtime in the first place was a total breakdown. Five goals in the third period is unacceptable.
Boston College scored two in quick succession and now Michigan is down 3-0. The Wolverines still haven’t figured anything out on offense and are clearly losing stamina on defense.
Hutch is a Michigan softball legend and now that legacy will be immortalized in the stadium. Check out my updated version of this story with quotes from Hutch and Michigan alum and current assistant coach Amanda Chidester
#BREAKING
:
@UMichAthletics
announced that it will be renaming Alumni Field in honor of former
@umichsoftball
head coach Carol Hutchins, who led the Wolverines from 1985 to 2022.
Tyler Duke gives Michigan a 1-0 lead after a scramble at the net. Rebound slipped out right to his stick and he flipped it in. What a moment for the former Buckeye making his return to Columbus. Fans of course booed when his goal was announced.
Gavin Brindley makes it 2-0 Michigan off a beautiful feed from Rutger McGroarty. And seconds later Mark Estapa makes it 3-0 after Minnesota goaltender Justin Close came too far out of his net.
Dylan Duke takes a hit to the head and goes straight to the locker room. That will be a major penalty and Michigan will have a five minute power play. Eernisse joining the top unit in place of Duke
Michigan with back-to-back power plays and can't capitalize on either. Some good set ups and shots in the first, but much less went right in the second. Michigan State gets a breakaway as the second power play expires but comes up empty. First period ends 1-1.
Back at Mullins for part 2 of
@umichhockey
vs
@UMassHockey
. Lines for tonight almost identical as yesterday. Barczewski gets the start again, and Rowe will skate in place of Pletzke, who left the game early yesterday after a hard hit to the head area.
Jacob Truscott fell in front of the net to block a surefire Michigan State chance with Barczewski on the complete opposite side of the goal. Huge defensive stop from the captain.
Michigan scored 12 runs in the third inning to dominant Northwestern yesterday. Relive the inning here before the final game of the series today at noon.
Michigan’s lineup largely the same as yesterday with a few swaps. Freshmen Maddie Erickson and Indiana Langford will make their first career starts at 1st and 2nd. Jessica LeBeau will make her first start from the circle in a Michigan uniform.
Michigan drops one spot after splitting opening weekend with Providence. The Friars move up five after dominating the Wolverines’ season opener and threatening a comeback late yesterday.
Seamus Casey made a huge block to save a goal. Looked like the puck hit his shin. He was skating a little gingerly but stayed out there and looks okay.
Jacob Truscott gets his first goal of the season on the power play. Centering pass from Nazar and a laser of a shot from the captain. 4-1 Michigan halfway through the second
Michigan defeats Longwood 2-1 behind an impressive defensive performance. With 2 runners threatening in the 7th, pitcher Lauren Derkowski responded with 3 straight strikeouts to end the game. Sieler and Erickson’s home runs earned the win on the offensive side.
UMass challenge for a major penalty on Holtz is successful, but Michigan's penalty kill foils the grand opportunity. Key blocking from Truscott and others and the composure of Barczewski in net carried the Wolverines through the threat.
Lexie Blair hits a double in Michigan’s first at bat and then scores the first run of the game off a Keke Tholl single. Great start for Michigan’s offense after a rough go last night.
Michigan vs OSU just got underway and tensions already high. Former Buckeye Tyler Duke was in the middle of a scrum along the boards, as both teams are trading chances early in the first.
Schifsky empty netter caps off Michigan’s 4-2 win. Wasn’t a pretty game for the Wolverines with a host of turnovers and a nonexistent power play, but they scraped by with the win. They will have yet another opportunity to claim their first Big Ten sweep tomorrow.
The Wolverine’s offense has them up 9-0 after 3. Mich batting 11-17, .647 average. Blair 3 for 3 with 3 runs. Tholl with 3 RBIs and a run. What a difference from last night.
Here for Michigan softball’s home opener against Kent State. About 20 minutes to first pitch so plenty of time to catch up on the season so far with our first pitch special addition:
Lines for
@umichhockey
vs
@GopherHockey
tonight. Same as yesterday for Michigan except Brendan Miles replaces Orrico on defense. This is Miles’ first time in the lineup this season.
