A commitment to respecting people's (data) privacy is a great thing. And it takes a cross-functional team, each member of which focuses on a distinct approach to privacy: cybersecurity, regulatory compliance, and ethics. #ai #ethics #aiethics #privacy #cybersecurity #compliance

The foundational question is an unavoidably ethical one: how should or ought power be distributed across individuals and groups (including government entities) such that the distribution is fair and good and just? #ai #ethics #aiethics

So, no, “how is AI shifting power?” is not a deeper question than what is fair and just and good. It is not a question that renders questions of justice otiose.

Indeed, if you don’t think things are more fair and just if you shift power in that way…then why should you or anyone else think power should shift?!

That’s all fine and well, in a way, but if you think the power *should* be shifted in that way, that’s presumably because you think it’s *fair* and *just* and *right* that power be shifted in that way.

The question to pose is a deeper one: how is AI shifting power?” The answer to that question the author is pushing for (link to article below) is, roughly: we should ensure that AI is shifting power to those who historically lack it.

I recently came across this piece of confusion that reflects a lot of the AI ethics talk out there: “It is not uncommon now for AI experts to ask whether an AI is ‘fair’ and ‘for good’. But ‘fair’ and ‘good’ are infinitely spacious words that any AI system can be squeezed into.

Lots of companies are talking about AI ethics or Responsible AI. But the talk doesn’t often translate to action because people get stuck on the headlines. In this article, I outline three conversations that can push AI ethical risk efforts forward.

Do you have the resources to assess whether your organization faces AI ethical and reputational risks that aren’t specified by regulations or laws? #ai #ethics #aiethics

I’ve done dozens of podcasts, but this one with Darshan Kulkarni is one of my favorites. Smart guy who asks interesting questions and made me think deeper about black box models and informed consent in a healthcare setting. Looking forward to our next conversation.

Call them IRBs or ethical risk committees or whatever you like; organizations using AI should adopt this aspect of the medical community’s efforts at ethical risk mitigation. #AI #AIethics #machinelearning #AIrisk #AIriskmitigation

Institutional Review Board [IRB’s] were formed to spot the ethical risks that practitioners often miss. They’re a crucial second line of defense.
