Our findings suggest that impaired social functioning in schizophrenia differs from other mental disorders and may be considered a core aspect of the illness. This aligns with classical psychopathological literature on schizophrenia. [9/9].

Also, there is a partial overlap between measures of psychopathology and social functioning, particularly with negative symptoms, which may inflate correlations. Caution is needed when interpreting impaired social functioning and negative/general symptoms correlations. [8/9].

There was considerable heterogeneity, both in study results and in measurements of psychopathology and social functioning. [7/9].

Both positive and negative symptoms were significantly correlated with personal and social relationships, socially useful activities, and self-care. However, we must acknowledge some caveats. [6/9].

The strongest associations were with general symptoms (r = −0.52) and negative symptoms (r = −0.52), followed by disorganized symptoms (r = −0.35) and positive symptoms (r = −0.32). Depressive symptoms had the weakest association (r = −0.23). [5/8].

All five psychopathological subdomains showed significant negative correlations with overall social functioning. [4/9].

To conduct this study, we searched @PubMedOnline, @ovid_wkhealth "Embase", and @APA_Databases "Psycinfo", identifying 1,288 studies. We included 36 studies with a total of 4,742 participants to analyze the association between psychopathology and social functioning in SCZ [3/8].

We examined the correlation between psychopathological subdomains (positive, negative, general, disorganized, and depressive symptoms) and overall social functioning. Surprisingly, we found moderate correlations across all subdomains, challenging conventional wisdom. [2/9].
