I love how the artists captured her ties to the Mardu while still using the Kolaghan designs, working in details like wing shapes in the red banners!

It was a perfect opportunity show her as an elder, like we’d shown before on the Pride Secret Lair. Unlike many of the other khans she lived on after the khanfall, prioritizing the survival of her people over a name. In her own way ensuring that the Mardu would continue on.

Which is why she is now RB color ID instead of Mardu! When game design requested a new Alesha card I jumped at the chance to concept it and work with AD Forrest Schehl. It was so fun be able to continue the story of one of the most important characters from the original block.

As the conceptor for these images and narrative lead on the upcoming Tarkir set I can confirm this is former Khan Alesha (and not her grandmother). She’s depicted here as part of Kolaghan’s brood, after she relinquished her title and ended the Mardu clan name. #WOTCstaff

In the wake of the Sweet Baby Inc stuff I want to say that it would have been impossible to make many of the awesome sets we’ve made, and impossible to tell many of the killer stories Magic has told these last few years, without the help of cultural consultants

I had so much fun leading this set, the Haystack is probably one of my favorite cards among well… many favorites :D

So excited to be attending my first GDC with such an incredible cohort. Looking forward to cramming my schedule with talks and meeting fellow writers & designers!
