Peatlands, mangroves & sea grasses naturally store carbon.
If drained or degraded they can no longer store carbon
When Peatlands are drained, they go from a carbon store to a carbon source.

absorb part of the shock. Their roots bind the shoreline and each km of mangrove forest reduces a storm surge by 50cm. Each ha of mangrove is worth up to $US15,161 a year in disaster-related services

Wetlands act as a source and purifier of water:
🌊 they protect us from floods and droughts,
🌿 they provide food and livelihoods to millions of people,
🦜 they support rich biodiversity, and they store more carbon than any other ecosystem.
Wetlands play a pivotal role in water resource management by acting as natural filters that purify water, effectively removing pollutants and enhancing water quality. Through their capacity to regulate stream flow, wetlands mitigate floods and droughts.
Migratory species are exposed to a diverse range of pressures that are driving population declines. The two greatest threats are overexploitation and habitat loss due to human activity. Urgent action is needed to safeguard the future of these species.
