@berlinale #janetplanet last film for this years #berlinale. enjoyable critique of certain type of lifestyle where no one seems to take responsibility for anything. Our German audience seemed to take it at face value, rather than the comedy we thought it was! PS last film was #raiz

#raim was lovely. Well as lovely as a film about the murder of herds of alpacas and the destruction of their communities and environment can be. But Peru qualified for the World Cup, Ronaldo had a nice haircut, and the workers were revolting. #berlinale @berlinale

#demba was a challenge, but not without plenty of good things. A man dealing with grief and his emasculation at work and in the town plays it pretty straight for a while, before veering off slightly. The lead was great, his relationships with others the highlight.

#lempire from #brunodumont was just as you would expect. Where else to set a budget version of Star Wars than the opal coast of France. Great faces, familiar, weathered faces, and plenty of fun. It doesn’t always fire, but delivers often enough for me.

#meanwhileonearth fell between two stools and fell away as the film progressed. Liked the idea, loved the animation, and enjoyed the score, but the execution was a bit misjudged. She was very good.

#smallthingslikethese did a really good job of adapting the wonderful book. It couldn’t capture the inner turmoil, so the exposition was a bit clunky at times, but the mood and feel was right. #cillianmurphy excellent, especially as we near that ending…

#dahomey at #berlinalepalast was really interesting. The debate about what the return of artefacts from France to Benin means was the highlight, so many layers to that conversation.

#kohlhieselsdaughters was a treat. Comic genius from minute one, just as you’d expect from #lubitsch. Amazing to be sitting a few feet from the #berlinerphilharmoniker

More success this morning. Made up at getting tickets for #matidiop's #dahomey as well as #meanwhileonearth and #smallthingslikethese with #CillianMurphy which won't be able to lay a finger on the book, but should still be good

#moscas started so well, but as it went on it unravelled into a bit of a muddle. Cracking lead actor, great premise, but comedy deaths and no real character development let it down. #iffr

#pandoraslegacy gave a glimpse into the life of #gwpabst but it didn’t really hit the mark. A bit unsure of what it was trying to do. Enjoyed seeing the archive footage, the correspondence between him and Trude, Olaf’s introduction, and the lovely palaeontologist grandson Ben.

#childrenofwarandpeace was an eye opening study of what it’s like to be in a constant state of war readiness. Finnish boys forced into action, women encouraged to have 15+ children, and uneasy pacts with the nazis. Much of the content feels terribly relevant right now

#nightvisitors at #iffr @IFFR last night was fun. Beautiful photography, loved the written and historical referencing, could have done without some of the experimentation with sound. #mothpalooza looked a hoot, @Oustonpics you would be in your element!

Lovely long weekend in #paris on the trail of #maigret, walking from #36quaidesorfevres to #boulevardrichardlenoir just as the commissar would have all those years ago. Plus a bit of #burtlancaster in #thekillers.
