I remember writing and designing a short story with plain A4 papers, markers and a very beautiful stamp when I was about 7/8 years old. I wanted even then to be an author, I was reading books voraciously and I wanted to create mine too. 1/5

Astonishing. I’m from the Cross River rainforest. Girls go days & nights in the forest for ogbono and wild afang as a coming of age thing. Traditions that are gradually being eroded because of development/deforestation/insecurity. But see twitter? Do you even know this country?

Ogbono is not Igbo soup. It is Yoruba soup and it is called ọbẹ̀ àpọ̀n in Yoruba. The seed of a wild mango is what they use to make àpọ̀n soup. Wild mango is called òro in Yoruba language. In Ibadan panegyrics, they praise Ibadan people as ọmọ a j'òro sùn. Ibadan wasn't

Wrote this last year after a chat with my mom. It's worrisome how many and multiple heartbreaking things keep happening. I really don't know.

Divisive narratives hurt us more and miss the point! Whether the Kebbian girls kidnapped are Muslims or Christians is hardly the point. Are we saying that either deserves such wickedness? These are lives! Young lives forever altered! Since when did lives become so dispensable!

Whatever you’re going through, as long as you’re not pregnant and you didn’t impregnate anyone, you will be alright.

In a culture where some people excuse rape and don’t see it as a big deal, this discomfiting truth is not at all uncomfortable to them.

They are going to schools to kidnap girls so they can rape virgins. Raped through the night. We need to sit with uncomfortable truths. We should not be allowed to block out the horrific stories. From wearing school uniforms to being married off, pregnant, dying in childbirth.

Touching, reflective, and unflinchingly honest, MRS KUTI offers a rare glimpse into the life and mind of Remilekun Kuti—teacher, activist, and the first wife of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. This posthumous memoir challenges the silences surrounding women in radical histories
