shame is not an effective social justice tool.

Having just one STI can permanently effect someone’s self-concept and future sexual behavior. Stigma surrounding STIs does no one good. There are other ways to teach the importance and value of safe sexual behavior - we do not need more fear surrounding our sexuality.

People feel ashamed for having an STI as if it indicates they are a damaged sexual being. They internalize this stigma and adopt a defeatist mindset. eg. “no one will love me because of my STI,” even though most STIs are treatable and have no long term health implications.

Let’s redefine how we measure the specialness of our intimate relationships. Today, the specialness of relationships is not only marked by exclusivity, but is special because it‘s exclusive. Exclusivity is a construct of ownership that isnt necessary or sufficient for specialness.
