Cartoon Rick here, and that's August 25th 1982 all done: as Argentina sinks deeper into economic turmoil, life in the Falklands is improving. Meanwhile, the UN is called to account and someone (blatantly Russian) is found around the Falklands, proving that peace is still fragile.

August 25th 1982: The fleet around the Falklands is called to Action Stations at 14:47 as a submarine is detected nearby. nobody knows who's it is, but after a time, it vanishes. Defence watch resumes at 23:20. The Falklands are still being probed. 1/3

August 25th 1982: "U.N - IMAGE OF FUTILITY" scathes the NYT as it castigates the "monumental irrelevance" of the United Nations in stopping wars or resolving anything, citing, amongst other examples, its lacklustre performance in the Falklands War.

2) Argentina's first female leader, Peron served from 1974-1976 amidst growing turmoil and unrest until deposed by the Videla Junta and forced to resign and flee into exile. The main man behind this deposition was Admiral Massera, seen to the right.

August 25th 1982: In Argentina, former President Isabel Martinez de Peron, the widow of General Juan Domingo Peron, is tried in absentia for embezzling millions of dollars in funds from a state-run charity. In exile in Spain, she already has a 7-year sentence if she returns. 1/2

2) . and the USA's extension of agrifoods to the USSR yesterday has only worsened the financial situation and taken out a key trading partner. GDP has dropped 7% in the first half, unemployment is at 14%, inflation is up 228% on 1981 and jumped 16% in July 1982 alone.

August 25th 1982: "Argentina's Deepening Slump" reports the NYT as the Argentine Economics Minister and the President of the Central Bank both resign. Argentina has failed to make $2.3 Billion in foreign debt repayments over the last two months. 1/2.

2) One more proposed site is on the ruins of the now razed Globe Store, on a plot of land owned by an Argentine resident, Charles Rowe, who quickly fled to Buenos Aires when the war broke out. Also, 23 3-bed pre-fab houses are planned to extend the western reaches of Stanley.

August 25th 1982: The Falklands Executive Council (EXCO) discusses the issue of excessive military vehicle traffic and parking in Stanley. A one-way system is developed along Ross Road and John Street, and three new parking lots are considered to house military vehicles. 1/2

August 25th 1982: Major General David Thorne, Commander Land Forces, Falkland Islands, joins EXCO, the Falklands Executive Council, by act of Royal Decree. He is now a member of both EXCO and LEGCO, the Executive and Legislative Councils of the Falkland Islands Administration.

2) Made in 1979 with only 600 hours flying time, it is mechanically very good, and FIGAS hope to retain it. The same helicopter was later used on the James Bond film "The Living Daylights" with Timothy Dalton. yes an Argentine Huey made it into a 007 movie!!

August 25th 1982: The Falklands Air Service gets a helicopter: “Thanks to the efforts of Government Air Service mechanic Vernon Steen, and helpful technicians aboard HMS Invincible, an abandoned and partially derelict Argentine Huey helicopter has been made serviceable. ". 1/2

August 25th 1982: JM Bodden of the Cayman Islands Executive Council writes to the NYT about the concept of remaining a British Overseas Territory and supporting the rights of the Falkland Islanders, slamming the UN C24. (Published Sept 3rd). 1/2

August 25th 1982: MV Anco Charger sails from Fawley on the South Coast back towards the Falklands where she will act as a short-term storage and supply tanker. She remained on MOD Charter until March 1984, making a number of journeys between the Falklands and UK.
