Adult American Golden Plover at Breydon Water. I’m pretty happy it was with a few Lapwing rather than in amongst the humungous European Golden Plover flock!

So it’s the time of year for finding, recording and enjoying rare breeding birds, but we must remember to put their welfare first! Here’s some advice from RBBP Secretary @Mark_A_Eaton, and there’s a blog here https://t.co/HdV3TJhayg [1/2]

There is so much escaped wildfowl around and undoubtedly many accepted records of e.g. R-b Goose, Fudge Duck are highly dubious. How many British records of Canvasback are of genuine vagrants? Judging by the paucity of records elsewhere in the WP, perhaps very few….(4/4)

So, with another at Abberton Reservoir right now, where are the other 4?! And, where else do they go when they’re not at Flixton?! In addition, 3 Fudge Ducks, Yank Wigeon, R-b Goose and dozens of R-c Pochards have also been dumped, along with a plethora of commoner spp. (3/4)

It turns out that the now closed-down Ellingham Wildfowl Park allegedly used the pit for dumping unwanted stock from at least 2005. The Suffolk Bird Report 2020 details up to 6 (!) Canvasbacks regularly at the site through spring following a release of birds in April 2020. (2/4)

I must admit I was pretty excited when I found this drake Canvasback at Flixton gravel pits in north Suffolk late this afternoon. However, investigative works by @Alexander_Lees yielded some pretty frustrating results….(1/4)
