Migratory Whooping Cranes are spending the summer in Wood Buffalo National Park, NWT. The shallow wetlands in Canada’s largest national park are the perfect remote habitat for the Whooping Cranes to nest and raise their young.

The Great Lakes Piping Plover population has reached a record 85 nesting pairs this year! Recovery efforts have been ongoing for nearly 40 years, starting when only a dozen nesting pairs remained along the coast of the Great Lakes.

Want to see more butterflies (and maybe take some great photos like our Bondar Challenge participants)?. Plant a pollinator garden! Whether you have a backyard or a balcony, planting a diversity of native plants creates a healthy habitat for pollinators.

Did you know that starfish digest their food before eating it?. Starfish have a small mouth, making it difficult to eat larger prey. Many species can extend their stomach out of their mouth, releasing digestive enzymes to break down their food before they swallow it.

This incredible photo—aptly titled “Angel Light”—was taken by a 9 year old camper from Glen Bernard Camp. We love seeing how even the youngest Bondar Challenge participants experiment with light and composition in their photos.

Piping plover chick alert 🚨. Piping plovers are hatching around the Great Lakes. It’s a particularly vulnerable time for these at-risk birds, as the chicks only weigh around 6 grams when they hatch—about the weight of a postcard!

To fuel their 15,000 km spring migration, Red Knots feed on the eggs of the horseshoe crab, an ancient species that is even older than dinosaurs. Horseshoe crabs have existed for over 300 million years, but they’re still critical to the survival of the Red Knot today.

Thank you to RBC Foundation for their support of our Space for Birds project. This funding has allowed us to gain critical new insights on the climate risks faced by migratory birds, and to bring attention to these risks through our traveling exhibition.
