(and note that LLMs will _very frequently_ hallucinate things about their system prompt or available tools in some setups!).

To be fair, asking human beings why they did something is also pretty unreliable.

The two cases where you can reasonably try to understand LLM behavior by _asking_ an LLM are 1) interrogating the system prompt and 2) interrogating reasoning traces (or other pre-registered plans). Otherwise, at best, you're getting a plausible explanation, not the actual cause.

@zeynep That's the output of the model (I think Claude Sonnet 4). It should not be taken literally. All explanations of its conduct (and internal states) are unreliable. Even more so when it is a follow up prompt. It's just looking back at the convo and weaving a coherent narrative.

Like evolution, you're in a much better place if you understand LLM output as essentially random, nudged into productive directions by selection effects, rather than as having intentionality.

It's still very difficult to use AI tools effectively if you don't understand the mechanics of how they work (and don't work.) The anthropomorphism of many AI products makes this worse.

people either: .- don't want to browse your website at all.- _really do_ want to browse your website. IMO, few cases where someone wants to browse your website, but. just a bit less. For 30 years browsing has been synonymous with "doing stuff on the internet". times change.

I think it's worth contextualizing the concept of "AI Browsers" against the behaviors people might want to automate. Looking at top websites by visits and time spent, we can quickly see these browsers are mostly search and shopping plays. Not a small slice!

This is an important finding. Web rendering gets delayed by Google, so you need to make sure your page still works when it's loaded days or weeks after crawling time. Vercel now handles this out of the box.
