This is an excellent development. I hope the WTO can make this a regular event cutting across economics, political science, and law. It was hard to get support for such an event while I was there though we did host a couple. Congrats to @NOIweala & @OssaRalph!

It is a privilege for the world to have as the @WTO director-general someone who is genuinely interested in using insights from academic research to help tackle difficult, pressing issues endangering the world trading system.

It’s finally out! Yesterday, we released the first report of the Task Force on Climate Action, Carbon Pricing, and Policy Spillovers at the @PIIE. It brings together the expertise of five international organizations to think about one of the most pressing challenges of our time.

Great to see @goescarlos win this award. And while his research insights are invaluable he also points out that previous award winners have made important contributions to trade research. Great for the @wto to continue to recognize and encourage young minds to explore this area

Unfortunately sounds like back to the bad old days. No institution is perfect, but the ITC is a high quality, independent government body with deep expertise & 6 political leaders w/ diverse views. Treating staff and other colleagues with respect is not too much to expect.n/n

Told potential Commissioner nominees to “behave.” And they seemed to while I was there - though Commissioners always asked tough questions and probed our analysis deeply - but no overt attempts to bring in ideological arguments over logical and analytical reasoning.

Strife from about a decade earlier. It was in the news as Commissioners had accused each other of leaking study results and/or aggressively trying to shape findings based on their ideology. Procedures were established to minimize those behaviors and Congress apparently

Economists have known for decades that there are winners and losers from trade. Policymakers often wanted to hear about only the winners or only the losers. The ITC reports walked a fine line. When I arrived at the ITC in 1999 it was recovering from internal Commissioner

More technical is the analysis. Many anti trade folks seem to want to use tools and techniques that frankly did not stand up well to objective, technical review. That’s more science and expertise vs ideological.
