RAP is proud to announce the launch of our latest law reform report: "Unreasonable Grounds: Reforming Victoria Police’s stop and search powers".

This is a startlingly low hit rate and an unjustifiable encroachment on our human rights.

There is no evidence that expanding designated search area powers will keep Victorians safe. Our report shows that police only found prohibited items on people 1% of the time when searching in a designated area.

We are deeply concerned and disappointed by the recent announcements by the Allan government with respect to bail laws and police designated area search powers.

Coverage of our latest report "Unreasonable Grounds: Reforming Victoria Police’s stop and search powers".
Illicit items, including weapons, were seized in only 1 per cent of Victoria Police searches without a warrant or reasonable suspicion in “designated areas” over a two-year period. https://t.co/PWekBgaBjh

The Government has acknowledged the laws aren't compatible with human rights, and it's shocking that anyone could be thinking of expanding these powers, let alone extending the period of designation from 12 hours to 6 months. 3/3

The point is people are citizens and shouldn't be treated like criminals. Further, this approach completely ignores the dangers of racial profiling and the stigmatic shaming caused by these kinds of interactions with Police and PSOs. 2/3

This is such great work by @RAPLV! The Vicpol line that "if you are not carrying a weapon then there’s nothing to worry about" is the kind of bogus logic used to justify arbitrary incursions to privacy for decades... 1/3 #springst

Police stop and search powers should be repealed and limited, not expanded, in order to protect the human rights of all Victorians.

The report addresses the Victorian Government's recent proposal to expand police stop and search powers. As this report shows, this is an unnecessary invasion of our human rights.

Despite very little evidence of their efficacy, these search powers continue to be expanded at the cost of Victorian's human rights and civil liberties.

Our report is the culmination of consultations across the legal sector, research, and FOI data from Victoria Police. This FOI data is key. It shows that police searches in designated areas yielded unlawful items less than 1% of the time. This is a startlingly low hit rate.

The report calls for major reforms of these powers to better protect the human rights of Victorians, and urges the Victorian Parliament to reject the current proposal to expand these abilities.

This report examines instances of "no reason" searches by Victoria Police - including designated area searches, consent searches, and searches associated with Firearm Prohibition Orders.
