On this day in 1936 was the prototype Spitfire's maiden flight. Captain Joseph "Mutt" Summers, chief test pilot for Vickers, took off in K5054 from Eastleigh Aerodrome (later Southampton Airport).

@RAFBBMF I thought I might go + pay my respects to the concrete aircraft in Reginald Mitchell Way, Stoke; Spitfire, Hurricane, Beaufighter, Dakota, Mustgang, Shackleton all honoured in street names close by.

@RAFBBMF @Barristerblog I remember standing on my Grandparents' garage roof in 1986 for the 50th anniversary to watch something like half a dozen take off from Eastleigh and fly in formation for a magical few minutes. The sound was amazing.
