the moralization of effort is also a capitalist ideal! we start talking abt who is "more deserving" of success and rewards based on whether they've suffered more and villainize ppl who choose not to punish themselves to achieve success
There are valid criticisms but I think some people are mad (and have been for a while) because they perceive Alysa as “putting in less effort” due to her carefree attitude. The moralization of effort is a real thing btw

ilia is such a sweetheart it’s genuinely mind blowing to me how people just look for reasons to hate on him

japan truly does have incredible pr because how am i seeing figure skating fans acting like being anti-usa and pro-japan is a principled anti-imperialism stance

it is hilarious objectively how much of the stuff people say against ilia (and alysa now???? i guess???) is the classic "i dont like them so im going to use any signs of problematic behavior to leverage it against them and pretend im doing it for moral reasons"

that japanese person was absolutely right. y'all don't see japanese skaters as real humans... because why do you never question them for not speaking on palestine? or about the absurdity of their recent elections? or about one of them following trump and takaichi?

we used to shame figure skaters for not acting professionally on a world stage even if it was just a practice session. now we have an ogm who said the F word on olympic ice and spent her practice sessions taking pics and videos. toxic overworked athlete culture is officially OUT

Amber Glenn, you made us all so proud and your resilience is endlessly inspiring. Isabeau Levito, your grace on the ice under pressure is a model to so many. And of course, our women’s hockey team with a heart stopping gold! What a beautiful day for our country at the games! 🏅

I genuinely cannot take this American athlete hate from these people especially the athletes that are “woke” yet still not doing enough in these people eyes then you look at their favs and they’re from Japan who stand with their gov like OKAAAYYY

idc about people who say she’s overscored and doesn’t deserve to win or those hate american athletes on principle etc but i do think there’s a certain brokenness in people who seemingly straight up hate alysa personally. like there’s actually something wrong with you i fear💔

after years of starved & traumatised girls dominating, seeing alysa stand atop the olympic podium because she WANTS to be there and for the love of skating and nothing else… is so powerful

Going from 3 straight Eteri girls to Alysa. When she was mean to be a skater in that exact mold, but rejected it. To have an Olympic Champion who doesn’t starve herself, dyes her hair how she wants, and skates truly for love of game. Women’s figure skating isn’t dead after all.

Fact check ☝🏼🤓 Japan just overwhelmingly elected a far-right government, is occupying Okinawa, and still has a literal emperor. Like let’s not play this game please

I'm Japanese, and I 100% agree that the way people talk about Japanese skaters is infantilizing AF. We literally live in a country where an anti-LGBTQ+ party (supported by people of all ages) just recently won an election in a LANDSLIDE.
@ayphyd japanese skaters aren’t constantly questioned for their political views in the same way other skaters are even after the election and i gen think it’s because they infantilize them
