"Identifies as" is hopelessly woolly and above all subjective, indicating acceptance of the notion of "identity". It should therefore not be used because it contains that editorial element. "Claims to be..." is objective and is how men who claim to be women should be identified.

This is why we have appellate courts, in this case potentially three. Intellectual rigour is expected in the EAT, likely in the Court of Appeal & just shy of a certainty in the SC. The "male plumber" is a canard. My old firm had signs warning eg "opposite sex cleaner present".
An approach that is certainly fresh and somewhat eccentric as compared to the Supreme Court’s crystal clarity on this subject.

The Sandie Peggie v NHS Fife judgment has landed. A partial win for Peggie but I’m not sure the ET have understood the Supreme Court judgment here and so I expect it’s very likely to be appealed. (The following is from the press summary of the judgment)
