Some years ago, I had an encounter that made me realize how being helped can be a trap. It was a warm evening, somewhere around 5 pm in Edo State, Nigeria.

Not like it is hard to appreciate someone who does something nice, but I found this encounter a perfect example of exploitation in the disguise of help. Let me know if you found this story relatable.

But I immediately noticed that this man was ready to turn this into an argument or raise an unnecessary scene. I could have carried this load through that distance without needing to pay a dime, but I decided to give him some money because I was too tired for any altercation.

But as soon as we arrived at the car park, I heard the man say "Give me small thing" in Nigerian pidgin, and I tried to refuse because I felt he was only helping me without a fee.

I consented and felt a bit relieved, because it seemed as though God answered me without even asking. The distance to be covered was short, just a few meters from the road, through the gate, to the car park within the school grounds.

I had traveled back to school at the University of Benin with my luggage and a weary outlook. Then, a young man approached me hastily, offering to assist me with one of my two luggage pieces.
