In case whether you were wondering whether the big tech companies would defend liberal democracy or just capitulate to authoritarianism...

. @Apple has complied with Russian demands to show Crimea as part of Russian territory on its apps, when viewed from inside Russia.

Hey @Apple : Crimea was invaded + illegally annexed by Russia. Caving to Kremlin demands to show Crimea as Russia on your maps endorses the changing of borders in Europe by force. Is this the policy you support? Any other int'l laws you endorse violating?

@ProfessorShaw @jason_kint Wait... Tim Cook, the dude who stood there doing nothing when Trump lied about Apple opening a new facility, shirked responsibility when it comes to an out of control, criminal government leader. I don't buy it.

@ProfessorShaw @mstepczyk Tim Cook is the worst person at Apple - according to an insider. Whole tech industry pretty awful. All of them. Traitors to the idea of America, adherents to the iron law of capitalistic greed.

Apple changing its maps inside Russia to make Crimea part of Russia is a huge scandal. Regionalization of facts is unacceptable appeasement.

@ProfessorShaw @jason_kint I’m consistently dismayed that people think there was some magical enlightenment wand waved over the planet at the end of WWII that prevents everything that happened in 1930s Germany from happening all over again. Of course companies are going to be complicit. They always were.

@ProfessorShaw @carolecadwalla They didn't capitulate to authoritarianism. They embraced, celebrated and facilitated it.

@ProfessorShaw @carolecadwalla It’s sad that we haven’t all learned that almost all large companies can’t be trusted to be honest and open, not just tech ones. Look at Boeing and their 737s. It’s odd that most of the companies with such moral problems are American?

@ProfessorShaw @carolecadwalla It’s not so much capitulating to authoritarianism as making the decision which results in the highest market access. Which is somehow worse. The infinite paperclip machine exists, except it makes profits not clips at any cost and is indifferent to the happiness of its consumers
