My latest book is 'To Judge and To Justify: Profiles of the Academic Vocation'. The title refers to the two core academic skills, as understood through an interpretation of the history of philosophy.

If you want to make young people open to the future, you need to lighten the burden that you carry from the past.

All the great philosophies of history have had a keen sense of what changes and what remains the same, and then they theorize the difference to project the future.

Method works best when it runs orthogonal to theoretical trends, ideally placing all theorists at some sort of disadvantage as they aim for validity. #ScienceAsGame.

Doubling down on a statement is often a good way to see what is at stake in an issue. It's like upping the ante in a card game.

The best way to overturn the standard is to confuse people about what the standard is. The first step is to render the discrete continuous.

If you want to remind people of what they already supposedly know, then do it succinctly like #Wittgenstein. Otherwise, it's not a reminder but a lesson. Latter-day analytic philosophers have totally missed the performative character of Wittgenstein's philosophy.

If you're conquered, oppose them at the level of administration. They rarely live up to the principles that informed their conquest.

You know you've succeeded when you disdain and even distrust those who go out of their way to praise you. It shows that you've retained your autonomy in the face of a chance event. And that will facilitate your future success. #Stoicism.

My next book 'Media and the Power of Knowledge', soon to be published by @BloomsburyBooks, is based on some of my teaching, where I've promoted truth-telling as a performing art.

Was not impressed that ChatCPT has me having ‘done a doctorate in theology under Rowan Williams at Cambridge’. My doctorate was in philosophy under Leon Pompa at Birmingham — on Vico. (Published, along with additional material too long for inclusion in the submitted thesis.).

There's no doubt that non-native speakers can gain a greater level of competence than native speakers of a language -- and they can even change the native linguistic norms. It's always happened and rarely noticed, unless politics gets in the way.

I began to get interested in the nature of #humanity when I realized that people could relatively easily find substitutes for what humans normally do.

I didn't have a lot of "You're brilliant" when I was a kid because that wasn't the style of my teachers. They didn't treat us like dogs in need of regular reinforcement.
