Correction: unfortunately it does need to be opened up. MS put in some short circuit to prevent the AV port being used and I didn't check it :(.

Turns out that the BIOS chip on the original Xbox v1.6 can be flashed and you don't even need to open it up. I found the debug serial interface contained commands for reading and writing the BIOS and SMC flash memory.
