In San Vicente Redwoods near Davenport, along the wall of an abandoned quarry, far away from trails planned to open next month, lurks White Moon Cave. Extending for nearly a mile, this is one of the longest caves in California. https://t.co/BvPgGC4sYi

Soquel Demonstration State Forest is a managed area for forestry research and education in the Santa Cruz Mountains. It is logged continuously but does have one small old-growth grove, Harrison Grove. The Demo Old Growths' Grove lurks nearby in the Forest of Nisene Marks.

Abandoned artifacts of past logging operations litter the southern redwood forests. Along Tarwater Creek in Pescadero Creek County Park, and not far from a giant virgin coast redwood, sits remnants of the Moore, Fisher, and Troupe sawmill, which manufactured railroad ties.

There are four dawn redwoods in Boston Public Garden. The oldest and largest was planted in 1963; the youngest grows only a few meters away. Another specimen grows next to a group of Bald Cypress, providing a rare opportunity to compare and contrast these closely related trees.

Little is known about this labyrinth in the Lime Ridge Open Space at the foot of Mt. Diablo. It appears to have been accumulated over time using the abundant loose rock available at the site (much of which comes from the many quarries that once dotted the park).

ECV's motto is "Credo Quia Absurdum", which should tell you about all you need to know. https://t.co/X6ETzN65u1 The Mountain Charlie 1850 chapter:

"Right wrongs nobody." You can find this quote, often beneath a likeness of famous settler "Mountain Charlie" to whom it is attributed, on plaques throughout the Bay Area. It indicates the involvement of the esoteric Mountain Charlie 1850 chapter of the Order of E Clampus Vitus.

Another odd tidbit: One of Miller's descendants is Tucker Carlson.

The inn is Mount Madonna Inn on Hecker Pass. Long closed, the inn has now fallen into disrepair. It has a notorious history:

The ruins atop Mount Madonna were once the summer estate of Henry Miller, "The Cattle King", who in the late-1800s was the largest producer of cattle in CA. His daughter, Sarah Alice, died in a horse-riding accident on the mountain and is said to haunt the park and a nearby inn.

Tim Kovar, founder and owner of Tree Climbing Planet, leads climbs once a year in March up old-growth coast redwood trees on private land in Los Gatos, California. Most ascents are up the 200' tall Grandfather tree.

Remnants of South Pacific Coast Railroad tunnels dot the Santa Cruz Mountains south of Los Gatos. Natural gas explosions, landslides, and earthquakes beset the line soon after it was incorporated in 1876. It was discontinued in 1940, though one tunnel is still used for storage.

Even now after decades of logging, most massive old-growth trees are surrounded by others in dense groves. Big Lonely Doug, a Douglas-fir on Vancouver Island in Canada, is a rare exception. Saved in 2011 by logger Dennis Cronin, it is the 2nd largest Douglas-fir in the country.

Petrov Zailenko was a Ukrainian Jew and WW II veteran who lived in makeshift huts in Hendy Woods State Park (CA) from the 1960s until his death in 1981. A trail leads to remnants of his former shelters. His remains are scattered throughout the nearby old-growth redwood grove.

Mount Umunhum (“resting place of the hummingbird” in Ohlone) is a 3,489' peak sacred to the Amah Mutsun people. Once the site of the Almaden Air Force Station, it was closed for many years as hazardous materials were removed and the radar tower repaired. It reopened in late 2017.

That is to say, the Google image seems to be implying that Europe is deforesting. But it's the other way.
