ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY... the 184.5-mile Chesapeake & Ohio Canal was completed! DID YOU KNOW❓ The canal was purchased by the U.S. government in 1938. It was eventually preserved as the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park.

Dr. Winfield Scott Montgomery fled enslavement & joined Union troops during the Civil War. He became a teacher in Vermont, graduated from Dartmouth in 1878, was a professor at Alcorn University, earned an MD from Howard in 1890 & helped to develop & operate schools in DC.
