Variable wakeup timings without player influence are the least interesting thing you can put in a fighting game tbh
if it's an actual player interaction like quick rise/roll/teching then you've got something, but when it's just "X character gets up 4 frames slower", nah

Recently replayed Mighty No. 9 after some years and god damn this game is grossly overhated. This is far from even being the worst Mega Man game, and I say this as somebody who's played all of the platforming games.
It has awful presentation though I'll give you that.

the conventional wisdom was that N64/PS1 was the most dated era of games 10-15 years ago & it's so funny to see it shift into "we need to RETVRN to the late 90's" now. i await patiently for the "2000's flash/hobbyist indie games were better" talking points in another 10-15 years
