According to an interview in Game Informer, Snorlax was named after Kirby, the character from the Nintendo franchise of the same name. Snorlax ( カビゴン Kabigon) was based on Kōji Nishino, who was nicknamed Kirby (カービィ Kābī), for his appetite.

@PokemonArtFacts Seeing Nintendo franchises influence each other always feels very wholesome to me; just the sense of comradery I guess.

@PokemonArtFacts thus disproves the "Nishino eats moldy food" myth forever

i think this is very interesting because everyone always said Kabigon was derived from kabi (mold in JP), because Nishino and/or Snorlax was said to be able to eat anything incl. moldy food but no, Masuda himself said that the "Kabi" part is actually from Kirby (カービィ Kābī)

@PokemonArtFacts there's also this early Capsule Monsters sketch, which shows a creature that resembles both Kirby and Nishino :)

Snorlax being named after Kirby would likely also explain this Game Freak sketch, which shows a creature that resembles both Kirby and Nishino
