People will bamboozle the fuck out of you when you meet them in real life cause all they post are aesthetic ass pictures and dumps on social media. Then you get around them and they are literally INSANE AND CRAZY 😭

It’s an honor if you do. This subset of Black Americans will support you through & through, it doesn’t matter how genpop turns on you or writes you off.

Why are you saving baked Mac & Cheese for Thanksgiving when ingredients are easily accessible year round? Why are you listening to strangers in your screen say mashed potatoes aren’t for Thanksgiving if you’ve had it during Thanksgiving for the past 47 years of your life?

My takeaway from the “appropriate Thanksgiving dishes” convo is that some of you are still living inside a deficit mindset. You’re an adult now. You’re allowed to eat what you want, when you want. You don’t have to inherit a life of “we have McDonald’s at the house.”

& I’m not saying that personal choices don’t matter, but they’re not enough & they’re not inherently radical. I appreciate that Womanism is comfortable w/ complexity, nuance & real life. Mainstream feminism online tends to flatten everything into “good choice” vs “bad choice.”

That’s why I align w/ Womanist thinkers who talk about liberation as something rooted in community, spirituality, material conditions, AND the lived realities of Black women, not just personal declarations or aesthetic choices. Liberation is collective, relational & structural.

Online feminism collapses 2 very different things: individual choice & structural resistance. A lot of ppl believe that a single. ISOLATED, micro-decision (e.g. styling yourself a certain way or opting into or out of marriage) is synonymous w/ “fighting patriarchy.”

I love when my feminism gets critiqued. It’s uncomfortable, but it forces me to look in the mirror. Like yes, I’m in love w/ a man, I’m a career woman, & I’m pregnant, yet everything the radical girls say is true. So the question is always - wtf am I doing to fight patriarchy fr?

I wonder what things the bbys are going to say are problematic about me when they’re discussing my philosophy & writings in their Black Fem Theory courses decades from now.

My only opinion on the topic of hair is there’s no such thing as get up & go. Be a lady! No lady should just be getting up and going anywhere without doing a little something something. (Pls do not reply telling me how much you love being crusty! I’m a stranger in your screen.)

Like, literally the hardest branches to trace on both sides point to tri-racial and maroon communities, one from the South & one from old NYC. Two completely different geographies, but the same historical blur created by mixed ancestry, crazy laws & shifting racial labels.

The contrast is jarring. Some ancestors trace back centuries w/o effort, while my line tied to a tri-racial free community hits a wall. So much Native lineage was collapsed into “white” versus “everybody else,” leaving mixed families misclassified and whole histories blurred out.

What’s been most frustrating about this process is how easily my [redacted] ancestors can be traced. All that pink in the upper left corner goes back to the 1400s (with photos and records), and that’s before they even arrived in America.

I stayed up til 4 AM working on my family tree. I’m never doing a DNA Kit. (I only care about the point of contact w/ America, and onward) so I’ve been doing it the old fashioned way, literally going through HANDWRITTEN census records and birth, death & marriage certificates.

I once asked my grandmother about our culture & she simply said, “We’re New Yorkers.” I assumed she was being a typical NYer, but it turned out to be literal, lol. Thus far, I’ve been able to trace us back to NYC in the 1700s as part of pre–Civil War Northern free Black lineage.
