The 2024 reprint of the B-format of ‘The Stellenbosch Mafia’ has just been published. Johann Rupert, Markus Jooste, Christo Wiese and the rest of the Boland town’s tycoons are all in there. And also, some rugger.

The footage makes it patently clear what happened. And rubbishes the “alternative” version put forward by right wing activists.
Johannesburg is now really coming apart at the seams: no water, no electricity, roads potholed, sidewalks dug up and left as is, sidewalks broken and overgrown, traffic lights run over by drunks and left to rust away. What’s the point?
What’s happening in the US is reprehensible, but remember the EFF and Julius Malema have done pretty much the same thing in our parliament for years now, storming the podium, stoking violence in the NA, subverting process and procedure.
So VIPs, political VIPs, can now use their blue lights and black BMWs and elbow other cars out of the road to deposit their children at school while the rest of us have to wait at traffic lights that don’t work because of loadshedding?
My new book, 'The ANC Billionaires: Big Capital's Gambit and the Rise of the Few' tracks how capital influenced the ANC, how it helped direct the transition, and the rise of a few connected politician-billionaires. Out on 31 October from Jonathan Ball Publishers.
If Malema and the EFF get anywhere close to executive power, we will see democracy die, constitutionalism replaced by authoritarianism and the rule of law replaced by the rule of whim.
Don't be scared my brother, history will absolve you. We should meet soon and plot the way forward but my immediate proposal is that you form something like Freedom Under Law or the Hellen Suzman Foundation and you continue to mark these racists.
We can assure you that you will…
Prof Mark Swilling on 702: “Had Brian Molefe and Matshela Koko signed the Power Purchase Agreements in 2015, 95% of loadshedding today would have been prevented…they wrecked the power stations and need to be held accountable…”
South Africa aligning itself with a country run by a despot, executing a war of aggression against a sovereign state. This government has loosened all moorings to reality.
This is gangster state stuff. Cloete Murray knew a lot about a great many people, and how it linked to the political elite. If ever there was a wakeup call, this is it.
Gwede Mantashe is quite the survivor in this whole thing. Zuma's secretary general who suppressed complaints by Themba Maseko and others, and now CR's enforcer as chairperson. He's still living the dream, despite his Bosasa windfalls.
Its rolling off the printing presses! The ANC Billionaires…starting with Anglo American boss Gavin Relly’s visit to Oliver Tambo in the tumultuous year of 1985, through the making of the transitional economic pact of 1994 and the rise of ANC connected tycoons. Out on 31/10/22.
The hunt for drinking water continues because taps in large parts of Johannesburg have run dry. Making my way on potholed roads through traffic lights that aren’t working because of loadshedding. City of Joburg + RandWater + Eskom = killer.
South Africa is simply *not* geared for tourists. Arriving back at
@ortambo_int
the contrast with international airports elsewhere is stark: dirty, dank and dark customs and arrivals. No colour anywhere, nothing that says "Welcome to SA", nothing. And then no transport.
What is Julius Malema's position on Jacob Zuma? State capture? VBS? Xenophobia? Rain? Sunshine? Who knows, depends on what time of day it is and what's in it for him.
Comment:
@CyrilRamaphosa
on Monday - we are all in this together. One for all. All for one. There is a limited limitation of rights.
Securocrats tonight - you have no rights now, do only as we say. You have no rights.
That’s how the two nights sound to me.

We’ve disembarked, after another haranguing by Polish authorities. A South African SAPS official, clearly frustrated after 26 hours holed up in the plane, telling the Poles: “Just because we’re from Africa doesn’t mean you can disrespect us.” We’re going to the terminal.

outside the Pietermaritzburg High Court today. We will not be silenced by Jacob Zuma, nor his acolytes.
Mob justice and public violence are destructive and detestable. But Bheki Cele seems to approach the Senekal farmers' violence way differently to his approach to the EFF's Clicks attacks.
We should be very careful with the flood of words flowing from Julius Malema's thoughts and how we report it. He is a walking conspiracy theorist, offering no evidence, ranting about race and scapegoating left, right and centre.
Listening to the rambling, incoherent brabbling by the ANC's secretary general, Fikile Mbalula, it is quite clear why corruption and mismanagement and incompetence is central to the National Democratic Revolution. He sounds like Zizi Kodwa, circa 2016, denying state capture.
This mission has now unravelled. The Presidency rejecting Reuters reports, statements by Ukrainian officials about explosions in Kyiv while CR is there as “all lies and misinformation”, and it seems like SA did not have the correct permits in place upon arrival in Warsaw.
South Africa's decision to effectively side with Russia, while her tanks and armoured vehicles crunch across the sovereign territory of another country, is disgrace, shameful and cowardly. We don't learn from history, we just repeat it.
No, rampant and endemic corruption, state capture, internecine ANC politics, collapsing governance, organised crime, and poor political leadership continues “to cast its shadow” over everything. Weak argument and a cop-out.
ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa says apartheid has continued to cast its shadow on everything his party has sought to do. Ramaphosa is hosting a dialogue ahead of the party's manifesto review.

Big win for justice and fairness and common sense. Jacob Zuma's frivolous and nonsensical attempt to remove a prosecutor and nail a journalist thrown out, with costs. And Dali Mpofu? Been a while since he's scored any sort of a win. via

Furious negotiation going on below the steps of the South African plane. The Poles are not going to allow us into the country, despite the correct permits and necessary visas having been obtained.
@News24
He wants to be president. Why then does he refuse to answer questions about his demonstrable links to (a) a significant state capture corruption accused and (b) a businessman who received lucrative Eskom contracts? Do they bankroll his lifestyle? And why?
How can this radio station be taken seriously? According to Zondo evidence revealed “quite conclusively that Koko was working with the Guptas…to facilitate the capture of Eskom…Koko was an integral component of the Gupta strategy to capture Eskom.”
It is an absolute disgrace that this ANC government aligns South Africa with a despot trying to redraw the map of Europe by invading a sovereign country, killing tens of thousands of people.
Jacob Zuma’s legal strategy is paying off. The key witness in his corruption trial has died, while he will be in hospital “indefinitely”, says correctional services. Who runs DCS? Why, Arthur Fraser, who was in charge of SSA when it functioned as Zuma’s Praetorian Guard.
The dice are beginning to fall: Zuma and the EFF bats for Moyane, the EFF is hunting Gordhan, Gordhan is testifying about state capture... Let's connect them dots.
The economy is convulsing: Comair goes into business rescue, Caxton to close its magazine division and SARS expects tax losses of R285bn. And that's all in the space of a couple of hours on a bland autumn Tuesday.
We've heard, inside the last 24 hours, from the government's chief scientist, the business community, the governor of the SA Reserve Bank and the Finance Minister, all detailing an unprecedented national effort to mitigate against Covid-19. It puts the last decade to shame.
BREAKING: NPA's AFU seizes assets worth millions of rands from asbestos corruption accused, cars including Porsche, Rolls Royce, Bentley...and Toyota Tazz.

chalets that used to be buzzing with swimmers and families are now decrepit, wasting away, stripped clean. A real disgrace.
Whoa! What have we here? The magistrate who chucked out the Matshela Koko corruption case neglected to declare that he is the director of a company that scored millions from Eskom. Odd? Well, yes.
Been waiting at
@HomeAffairsSA
in Roodepoort since 08:30. Long queues outside, disorganisation inside, “the system” has been offline twice, thrice and only one counter out of 10 is working. The levels of dysfunction is incredible. And we’re sitting, and waiting. And waiting.
This is how it works: Ramaphosa makes announcements, then Mbalula takes the questions, explains the rationale and says the ANC needs to intervene in government, it needs to “extend its tentacles” (verbatim). No separation between party and state, the state is the ANC.
@mgigaba
Rather read the report and retain counsel, because you've got something coming. There is plenty of evidence that shows how the Guptas were assisted and enabled. Attacking the Acting Chief Justice's "handlers" is so 2017.
These television interviews with the president are quite something. He’s talking about the Zuma years and state capture as if it happened under another party, run by other people. Any print media get the nod for a sitdown?
I sat on the press gallery on the right when the speaker read Thabo Mbeki’s letter of resignation following his “recall” in September 2008. It was based on the flawed Nicholson judgment, later overturned by the SCA. Gwede Mantashe led the charge. Today feels similar.
This is an unfolding disaster. The ANC’s secretary says the SARB’s mandate will be expanded, the finance minister says hands off and the ANC’s economics head says no decision has been taken. All on a day where GDP declined by more than 3%. Jeez, and its not even 23:00 yet.
Part 6, Vol. 2, paragraph 200: 'The natural conclusion is that, during this period, the most dominant political faction - the ANC under President Zuma - permitted, supported and enabled corruption and state capture.' A more damning indictment of the ANC you won't get.
The scale and the depth of corruption at Eskom is, quite simply, breathtaking. It is all-pervasive, prevalent at every level and exists in a deeply entrenched eco-system sustained by politics, inertia and ANC cadre deployment.
Julius Malema seamlessly slipping back into his fascist-bullying mode, accusing a journalist attending the Chief Justice interviews of "white tendencies". Meanwhile his EFF sidekick Dali Mpofu just carries on with unfounded and baseless allegations. Ludicrous.
Eskom has over the last 10/15 years effectively been run into the ground, debt has soared and basic maintenance became an afterthought. Politics, corruption is at the heart of the SOC’s woes. Firing the management, board really won’t make a difference. 2/2
And it all started with that fateful decision — from Zuma’s perspective — to appoint Thuli Madonsela as Public Protector. And once she got stuck in, she didn’t let go, despite the despicable attacks on her by the ANC. Some accountability at last for the enabler-in-chief.
The amount of ill-informed garbage spilled by ANC politicians, RET types, and an assortment of television and radio hosts about the resignation of André de Ruyter and the parlous state of Eskom (and the reasons for it) is astonishing. Heavens above.
Ray Zondo looks and sounds genuinely exasperated, even defeated, as he listens to SSA DG Jafta talk about R9bn being unaccounted for. And then he casually tells of one project where R125m disappeared. No action taken that anyone knows of. Looting on an industrial scale.
The EFF's default argument (she's black, she's a woman, WMC) is so tired and predictable. No reference to the merits of the independent panel. Just breathless and empty racial incitement.
Just cannot take someone like this seriously. Especially after prancing around on her way to Sandton Square or wherever she spends her public service salary. And the beret? Championing the Cuban wonder-drug?
Things are now crumbling for JZ at a rate of knots.
@karynmaughan
reporting that the SCA has turned down his appeal in the matter over his legal bills. He will now have to pay back a couple of bar to the state. The sweet ride is coming to an end.
Some embarrassing takes on Eskom and De Ruyter offered up as analysis and commentary. There’s still an almost complete inability among most to grasp the extent to which Eskom was gutted over the last 15 years. This might be deliberate, but its also clueless.
Revolting how South Africa just meekly rolls over for a murderous despot, and then tries to justify our subservience to a country waging an illegal war. This is great press for Moscow, while we’re actively alienating our allies and biggest trading partners. Just daft politics.
🇷🇺🇿🇦 Press release on Sergey Lavrov’s visit to the Republic of South Africa 👉
🤝 Moscow & Pretoria voiced their commitment to deepening political dialogue and more actively coordinating their efforts on topical international issues.
Gigaba, the state capture enabler, Dlamini, the SASSA destroyer, Zwane, the minister of Gupta affairs and Mokonyane, who bankrupted water affairs -- all considered upstanding enough for the ANC's list. Telling.
The EFF is finding out, at great cost, how a constitutional state works and how the courts view their machine gun prattling and insults. This, after the Trevor Manuel judgment last week, won't be the last. via
@News24
If Jacob Zuma was the principal enabler of state capture, Baleka Mbete wasn’t too far behind. Her bloody-minded focus on protecting her party effectively neutered parliament. She was a disgrace to the office of speaker.
In 1992 Anglo American controlled 34% of the JSE. At its height, it produced a third of the global gold output, and 80 per cent of the world’s diamonds. Today 44 Main Street, Johannesburg, is empty. And Anglo is the target of a hostile takeover.
Paul Mashatile wants to be president. His supporters want him to be president. But what has he achieved over more than 25 years in public office? Policy reform, modernisation and execution? Nothing in his record suggests he should run anything more than his own affairs.

on the embarrassingly shallow lines of questioning of CJ candidates & how the purpose of the EFF-led JSC was simply to take out political opponents by any means necessary. It remains a disgrace.
Her deployment to Parliament by the ANC was a disgrace and confirmed the governing party's disdain for the legislature and oversight. The damage done to constitutional democracy is severe, and the ANC must be severely punished for it. via
@news24
@DrZweliMkhize
’s strike on Glenda Gray — including the language used in the statement — affirms the government and the governing party’s intolerance of criticism and dissent. As Alex vd Heever said yesterday, it perceives criticism as attacks and those that makes it as enemies.
There seems to be a hell of a lot of small minded people engaged in this Johannesburg coalition. Civic duty takes a back seat to pettiness and sniping — and it is us, the ratepayers, who lose. Well, people will simply leave the city and move elsewhere.
We’re sitting in the dark because your government’s flunkeys destroyed Eskom, there’s no jetfuel at ORT and millions don’t have food, but let’s send money to Cuba? You are clueless.
South Africa cannot turn a blind eye to the plight of Cuba while illegal blockades and US sanctions strangle its economy.
This according to International Relations and Cooperation Minister Naledi Pandor. |
@JasonFelix
Until a high-profile individual, like a minister or former minister, is prosecuted “the fight against state capture will remain theoretical,” says Mcebisi Jonas.
@TeamNews24
The EFF brings anarchy and violence to every legislature or council it sits in. It is anti-democratic, undermines the rule of law and will destroy institutions, convention and process as far as it goes. Again and again.
That's it. The capital of the republic will be run by a majority city government consisting of a DA-ASA-FF-ACDP coalition. Big opportunity for the opposition to show how a non-ANC government in a major metro looks like.
Why would you want to give access to big budget portfolios to a party led by a convicted criminal and the erstwhile sushi king? Why open up new avenues of patronage and resource extraction? Some smaller parties have a case to answer for.
Absolutely atrocious televison dished up by

. Shallow, ill-informed and smittenly giggling with an MEC babbling away as he spins away the irregularities at the Gauteng Provincial Government. No accountability, just fealty and subservience.
In the year before Polokwane, the DSO initiated 368 investigations, completed 264 and finalised 214 prosecutions, with a conviction rate of 85%. It arrested 617 suspects, seized assets of R1 billion and recovered contraband and drugs worth R1 billion.
André de Ruyter was never going to survive an ANC government married to Marxist central control, entrenched corruption and criminality and a company maimed by mismanagement and neglect.
This is a rip-roaring success…big crowd, massive energy, singing and cheering, wonderful atmosphere, kids chasing autographs, you can see people falling in love with the game…like the B&H Series of old. Well done
@GraemeSmith49
and co!
The president was good tonight. He's a modernist and forward-thinking, he was clear about the role of the private sector and government, and stood up for the rule of law (could have been stronger). He will however be felled by an inefficient state and a corrupted governing party.
BREAKING: The NPA's new investigating directorate have secured the services of Advocate Geoff Budlender and former Scorpions ops chief Advocate Thanda Mngwengwe. This is huge.
@TeamNews24
The fact that residents of three NW towns were given control of council's water and sewerage works by the High Court isn't getting nearly enough attention. This from the judgment - how utterly embarrassing for this government.
How on Earth is it appropriate that Julius Malema can question judges over matters where he and his party were sanctioned? He should surely have recused himself? via
