This thought comes to mind often when working with persistent pain patients. ‘If you keep looking for the cure, you won’t get better’. Once the process of accepting begins, opportunities to ‘get better’ arise.

Thankfully some patients respond by staying active and self managing. However, lots go on to have expensive interventions and surgeries with mixed outcomes. We are creating a society of broken people who need fixing rather than a society of motivated people who need supporting..

Just because our patients are certain age doesn’t mean they deserve a more complex or harmful diagnosis. We know know joint changes and pain are poorly correlated yet we continue to diagnose patients with osteoarthritis.

When in fact, as you age you are more likely to be less active and develop muscle weakness and reduced proprioception. All factors which put you at risk of common MSK conditions such as anterior knee pain or non specific low back pain than can be readily modified with simple rx.
