I've always had a soft spot for Kata Beach. Stayed here my first trip to
#Phuket
in a 500 baht bungalow right off the beach in 2012, and from the first day knew I'd move here one day.
Took me 10 years, but I did it. 😂
In the most heartwarming thing I've seen in ages, I watched this son over the course of an hour help his elderly mum have dinner at a hawker. She resisted, even yelled at him, but he persisted.
There are still good people in the world. I bought him a coffee & said thanks. 🙏
For anyone in the same boat as me, currently stuck outside of
#Thailand
needing "alternative state quarantine" upon return, I've done the legwork for all opts as of June 28 for hotels, prices, and room sizes (called each; websites; etc). Hope this helps!
Friend of mine just got this pad on Samui for New Years, hilltop with private pool and ocean view, for... wait for it... 750 baht ($25) a night.
Ho. Lee. Shit.
#Thailand
Take my advice, Twitter. Do NOT attempt to travel until this is all over. What a bloody nightmare it's all been.
That said, FINALLY back in the land of som tam and Singha. FINALLY.
#Thailand
Methinks I've out-bougied myself on this one. Didn't realise this place in Khao Lak (Phang Nga) was gonna be so fancy. This villa is ridiculous.
The resort even has its own Teppanyaki restaurant and gin bar. 🤣
#Thailand
It's a Xmas miracle! The kitchen contractors said they'd be done by Xmas, and at 6pm Xmas eve... they are!
Somebody call the Guinness Book of Records. This has got to be a first for
#Thailand
...
We now have a kitchen, first time in MONTHS. Woo!
Wow. That's a first. Some American dude just went ballistic at the security guard at Villa for refusing to wear a mask. You could hear him swearing all across the store.
This would happen fairly regularly in the US, but in
#Thailand
?
Making the rest of us farang look bad. 🙄
I haven't gone to watch the sunset in ages, mainly because traffic has been so bad. You can forget it in the car; gotta take the bike.
Worth it. No editing. 😍
#Phuket
In
#Thailand
, almost all business is conducted via Line (or FB).
In
#Singapore
, it's WhatsApp.
Is this an Asian thing, or am I just a dinosaur who still expects things to be done via email?
Everyone in
#Thailand
picks on me for having a dishwasher, and my mother in law flat refuses to use it.
But it's so convenient, and gets the dishes way cleaner than doing 'em by hand.
#expatlife
Hard to believe there are still places as undeveloped as
#KohKood
, and that's a good thing. Clearest water I've seen outside the Phuket area in
#Thailand
too!
Y'all. I am completely in awe.
Off the plane and in the hotel shuttle in under 20 minutes... even with 100+ ppl all at once, health checks, immigration, AND the PCR test.
Well done,
#Phuket
! Hell, it's easier than it was pre covid! 😂
I had forgotten how cute
#Phuket
Town is. First time I came here years ago it wasn't so cool.
Now? Sad to see it so dead, but they've done a great job of it.
Thai contractors strike again.
Check this shit out. Putting in an outdoor kitchen, they literally thought it'd be ok to just run a pipe to the sink across the floor.
Like... seriously? 😂😂😂😂😂
One thing I will say: the island hopping boat trip was ace, but I won't go back to Phi Phi again. What an absolute madhouse of a tourist trap.
I wish I had seen it 30 years ago, but it's finished. 😭
#Thailand
Ended up on an all day boat tour with the family today.
Always good when family comes to visit, as otherwise we never bother doing the beautiful sightseeing that
#Thailand
is known for. 😍
Oh, how I love how cheap wine is in Europe. Just paid €1.59 for a bottle of Portuguese red that is actually quite nice. It'd easily be €30 in Thailand... and that's if you could even get it. 😂
#Portugal
This is hands-down the nicest rejection letter I've ever received. These days, I'm excited just to GET a rejection letter--that means they actually got the application!
Why can't all companies do something like this? It's not that difficult to make a form letter & be a bit kind.
Hard to believe this time last month, I was stuck in some wannabe hiso
#ASQ
hotel after months of fighting to return to
#Thailand
... and now here we are signing a house buying agreement 10 mins from a beach in
#Phuket
.
Gonna be in debt, may as well do it big. 😂
#AllOrNothing
Pool update, 7 months later: finally did the last bit, the pool deck. Now to wait for the lipstick palms to grow up.
The next project, probably next year as I'm broke: a pool porch bar. 😂🍻
Damn I love how efficient Changi is. And now that there is no required PCR on landing in
#Singapore
, it's a cinch!
Are you listening, Thailand, with your silly double PCR and quarantine night? We're so close to getting back to easy travel!
Huh. So that's what a 2,000 litre tank looks like.
In other news, we went from no water pressure to "gentlemen beware of the bum gun" pressure, if you fellas know what I mean. 😂
I may or may not have gotten drunk in the States and bought an electric smoker that I hauled all the way back to
#Thailand
in my luggage. Amazingly only one leg broke.
Now I gotta buy a 2000 watt transformer. 😂
See people, if you play your cards right and set your mind to it, you may be poor (like me)... but you can move to paradise.

Went to late lunch with a friend in Kamala and stopped by Surin on the way back. I don't think I've ever seen so many people on those beaches in my 10+ years of visiting here. They're absolutely packed. 😳
Oh well. Least
#Phuket
is still pretty. 😍
Stood in a queue outside the Thai embassy over an hour to even get in the door, but two hours later, FINALLY have a damn visa! They've had my passport over a week too.
Took what, 2 months of trying and 130k baht (so far)?
Next stop, airport...
#Korea
to
#Thailand
!
#Phuket
often gets a bad rap (and often rightfully so), but it's still got some beautiful (and largely empty) beaches if you don't mind a bit of a hike. 😍🏖️
Gotta love Asia. Beautiful day, some holiday (no idea what), and yet I still have the entire resort-style condo pool to myself.
Nobody will come out till the sun starts to set. 😂
As busy as
#Phuket
is, it's still so damn pretty. 😍
Maybe one day, if/when
#Thailand
ever grows up, they won't let it be overrun.
Until then, gotta focus on the positive. 🙃
At the hotel, we parked Betty White (our Fiat) next to an identical car. German guy came out of his room shouting, what the fuck are you doing?!?... Only to then realise we weren't, in fact, stealing his car.
His wife couldn't stop laughing. 😂😂😂
I amuse myself.
I spent all this money to put in a full western kitchen & outdoor two-grill kitchen at our place in
#Phuket
, but to pay for it I have to live in this tiny-ass flat in
#Singapore
cooking pasta in a cheap sauce pot & fish in a bowl on the floor. 😂
#expatlife
Well, my dumbarse has gone and gotten myself a 'real boy' job in Singapore for the fall. Never even been.😅
Once rona is over, about the same direct flight time to Phuket as Bangkok, which is great.
That said, Singapore's basically Fort Knox to get into right now...
I stood in the "cheap" wine section today for at least 10 mins, but just couldn't bring myself to spend 400+ baht on shitty "fruit wine."
One thing I'll never get used to in
#Thailand
is its draconian 300% tax stance on booze. Especially wine.
My Russian neighbours (nicest ppl you'll ever meet) invited me over for wine tonight.
"I've got red and white, what should I bring?" I asked.
As he lit a spliff, Alex says, "We're Russian. We'll drink anything."
My kinda people. 😂
Pool update, week 3: finally got the wall painted, and the landscaping is being put in today!
Next up, pool deck. Fence I'll have to do myself as we can't find anyone to do it. Pump house will have to wait as I'm broke. 😂
Things I'd forgotten I love about the US south:
-burgers & BBQ galore
-can drink the tap water
-people are so damn nice & friendly basically everywhere
Things I don't:
-NO BUM GUNS!
#murica
As I sit here on my balcony in
#Penang
, I keep trying to motivate myself to go do something cultural, see Georgetown...
TBH, I just can't be bothered. I think I'll just be a lazy twat with cheap M&S wine and a book, even though I could also do that in Phuket. 😂😂😂
Ah, America. Hour long queue to clear passport control and customs in Dallas.
As I've said before, I feel like it should be a UN rule to force airports to visit Changi in Singapore to learn how it's done.
Friend of mine is moving to
#Bangkok
next year. Out of curiosity, figured I'd see what the condo I used to live in before we bought a place is going for.
Wow. I moved in 2014, and the prices are still the same (or less)! Condo investments = bad idea in Bangers. 😳
Of the countries I've had to do immigration visits (fingerprints, photos, etc), here's how they rank in terms of 1st time at their office:
1) Singapore: 3 mins (literally)
.
2) Germany: 1 hr
.
..
3) Korea: 3 hrs
.
..
...
....
.....
4) Thailand: HAHAHAHAHAHA
Today's agenda: immigration, fingerprinting, etc. This'll be the 4th country I've done for a work permit equivalent, so let's see how
#Singapore
does.
I have high hopes I'll be on a beach by noon. 😅
As much as I love
#Bangkok
and my years there, I'm glad I didn't move back this year like I was considering.
The air quality alone in
#Singapore
makes it worth it, boring as it is. 😭😅
