Actor for 52 years this year. Quadrophenia. High Hopes. Vera Drake. North Square, Bleak House, Sherlock, Whitechapel. Poldark, Riviera, Trying, Truelove etc.
Nadine Dorris is an idiot. The BBC is a national treasure. Something we can be proud of despite its mistakes and missteps. To scupper it like this is cultural vandalism. Disgraceful.
A level sense at last but too late for my daughter. Durham uni have given her place to someone else. She was one A star away from required grades. Disgraceful
The BAFTA awards were an embarrassing travesty. Cutting deserving winners speeches for toe curling non interviews. Poor Richard E Grant pretending to arrive in a Batmobile and no Bernard Cribbens in memorium. I resigned my membership
Had to say goodbye to Archie yesterday. A growth on his liver. He was SO loved and adored and he loved us back. Our family are bereft. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, but we didn’t want him to suffer. Goodbye old fella.
Happy Valley is a fantastic piece of work, a great cast headed by Sarah Lancashire a truly brilliant actor at the top of her game. Many congrats to all involved.
I was born in July 53, the year and month of the queens coronation. A lifetime. Great sadness at her departure. Whatever your politics, she did what she was supposed to do. We will not see her like again.
Lovely memorial service this afternoon at the actors church in Covent Garden for the wonderful Sylvia Syms. Moving and uplifting. A celebration of a life well lived.
So sad to hear that the glorious Sylvia Sims has passed away. I had the pleasure of working with her a few years ago. She was brilliant, mischievous and hilarious. My condolences to her family.
So sad to hear that Steve Harley has died. He produced my only record the aptly titled Blown It in 1980. He was a kind and generous man. My condolences to his family.
I had the pleasure of working with Jean Boht at Stratford East in the early 70s. Joan Littlewood adored her. Her work was always wonderfully funny, eccentric, natural and real. A proper original. RIP
Bored with all the bollocks. BJ knew, whether Dom told him or not, he knew it was against the rules, he made them. Everyone at that party KNEW. Get rid of them all
In 1977 I did a play called Gotcha in the theatre and on TV. It’s now available from the BFI shop in the Play for Today vol. 2. It was a life changer for me
I LOVE playing Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol at the RST. It’s a fantastic production, a great company, and we’re getting a tremendous response every night. A joy!
Don’t miss Truelove on Ch4 from Jan 3rd. Much talk lately about assisted dying. This is a drama that explores it honestly, very proud of this one. Catch it if you can
Bleak House now available on BBC iPlayer. Brilliant adaptation by Andrew Davies, wonderful cast, one of the things I’m most proud of. If you missed it first time round catch it now
I got a couple of tomato plants from the garden centre and put them in pots in my front garden that gets the sun. Oh the joy of home grown tomato salad with mozzarella
Enjoying a bit of R&R at home with my lovely girls but missing playing my Ebenezer Scrooge at the RST. Such a wonderful gig. Fantastic company. These things come along all too rarely.
Very sad to hear that Carl Davis has passed away. He scored my first film as a director ‘Skulldiggery’ and later Real Women a mini series for the BBC. Working with him was an education and joy. A wonderful talent. RIP
First preview of A Christmas Carol at RST completed tonight. They loved it. Work to do but we’re in with a chance of David Edgar’s brilliant script justice. Eventually.
Rewatching North Square on More4 over 20 years since we made it. Wonderful writing and a terrific cast including the late great Helen McRory. Well worth a revisit
Thrilled and excited to be part of the Harold Pinter season of short plays at the Pinter theatre later this year. I’ll be in Celebration and Party Time
Why can I play golf? Easy to isolate. Safer than walking my dog in the woods with joggers gasping past me. Makes no sense. Good for us physically and mentally. Utterly daft.
I’m not anti trans, I saw a tweet by Owen Jones claiming to be further away from Nazism than something by Glinner. Thought it was unfair and daft. Nothing more or less
