A public hanging of murderer George Smiley in Holbrook in 1899 drew scorn from President McKinley as an unseemly spectacle due to a fancy invitation sent out by the sheriff. Smiley got a 1 month reprieve before he was hanged at this courthouse Jan. 8, 1900.

La Concha Motel in Las Vegas opened in 1961 and closed in 2004. It was moved and repurposed to serve as the lobby of the Neon Museum in 2007. The Googie style architecture was designed by Paul Wiliams, a prominent African-American architect.
