This 66lbs curling stone, 'Black Meg', was previously owned by the Coupar Angus and Kettins Curling Club. Tracing its origins to 1749, the club is one of the oldest in Scotland. Possibly imported by Dutch merchants, curling is likely to have become popular from the 16th century.

The new Perth Museum will open its doors in the spring of 2024, and to start the countdown, we have launched a new website highlighting the objects and stories that put Perth and Kinross at the centre of Scotland's story.
This early medieval sculpture, the Pictish St Madoes cross-slab, dates to the eighth century. Its imagery symbolises the authority of the church and features biting dogs and two lion-like creatures facing each other across the top of the stone.

The Carpow Logboat – the oldest and best preserved in Scotland – has been radiocarbon-dated to around 1,000 BCE. With a crew of two, the boat could readily have moved cargo up to a tonne in weight, around the estuary and along the Rivers Tay and Earn.

Have you spotted our toilet seat? 🚽
This seat from 1275-1325 CE, was probably cut down from a two-seater plank. At one end there is incised decoration of chevrons and diamonds, probably cut idly while someone was using the toilet.

Ouch! Who remembers this? Until 1987, Scottish schools frequently used a leather strap called a "tawse" to discipline children for "bad behaviour." The punishment involved teachers beating the outstretched hands of children. This tawse was used at Caledonian Road School in Perth.
With war approaching and the terror of poisonous weapons being dropped by aircraft, the British Government began issuing gas marks to families across the UK. This one, designed for children under 2 years old, was issued to a family in Scone.
