Here’s today’s Expert Group on Canada-US Relations discussion paper on the Canada-EU Security & Defence Partnership. There are some very positive potential benefits for Canada, but we’ll need to manage the process very carefully.

First full day of summer. Making soup. Too much snow in the BBQ to grill outdoors. This is why I love Alberta.

The federal parties conspired to push this bill through Parliament, claiming that it would promote labour peace. Predictably, it’s having the opposite effect, and small businesses and the general public are paying the price.

The Prime Minister has now made outstanding appointments both as his Chief of Staff and as Clerk of the Privy Council. It’s heartening that they’re signing on at a time when we need to attract the very best people to government.

Canada has a choice: we can act as a sovereign nation by shouldering more responsibility for our own defence or we can be a protectorate. Neither option is free. One costs dollars; the other costs our nationhood.

We will invest in new submarines, aircraft, ships, armed vehicles, artillery, radar, and drones — equipment that for too long, Canada has let age and deteriorate. And we’ll rebuild with Canadian steel, Canadian aluminum, and Canadian workers.

This is very sad news. Marc was a former member of the armed forces, a pioneer in space, a leader in government, and a fine human being. Canada is better for his participation and poorer for his passing. Our hearts go out to his family.
