BIG ANNOUNCEMENT šŸ“¢. After decades of being pulled into the all-consuming orbit of the Postmodern Anti-Story, the zeitgeist started to shift. We're beginning to find ourselves moving from cynical to aspirational, from irony to sincerity, and from despair to meaning. The Pixies

Just five years ago I never would have mentioned I'm a parent (let alone a grandparent) at a gathering of tech bros. Now it's a conversation magnet: young men peppering me with questions about children's books, movies, restaurant behavior expectations, and starter Dickens.

This is almost impossible for young people to imagine, but our biggest cultural heroes used to unironically wave massive American flags around and everyone would cheer.

Hulk Hogan was a larger than life icon of American culture for Gen X’ers & older Millennials. No one embodied the zeitgeist of American culture better than him in the 80s & 90s. His ā€œheel turnā€ in ā€˜96 perfectly captured the cynical vibe shift emerging in the ā€˜90s.

Those reasons are real and painful, but they don’t fully explain the relatively sudden trend towards leaving Christianity that we’ve seen in recent decades. I offer another likely explanation as to what changed here:.

Why didn’t your grandparents ā€œdeconstructā€ & leave the faith?. The common reasons I hear for young people deconstructing are:.1. Church hurt.2. Moral failure of church leaders.3. Bad theology.4. Unanswered Questions . But didn’t these same problems exist for our grandparents? 🧵

This is largely accurate, but it’s also missing another phase in between 2010-2020:. Movie that Cynically Subverts & Deconstructs the Thing

Great to be back on with @HuttonOutkick & @TheChadWithrow to talk about the deeper meaning behind trends in culture!. It’s the ONLY national sports talk show in the country I’ve seen doing this. (My segment is at the 46 minute marker šŸ‘).

Here are some of the top movies of 1996-1999. Notice the subtle progression each year of more darker, cynical, and postmodern films. 1999 was the cultural turning point.

Talk to people under 25 and ask them who has more cultural influence: Saturday Night Live or someone like Kai Cenat. You might hear back, "What's Saturday Night Live?"

Obviously, there are numerous things wrong with this attempt at outrage farming, but there's one thing he got correct:. There is a mismatch between the male evolutionary instinct for polygyny and the modern moral norm of monogamous marriage. But here's why his strategy is

Now imagine if this question was:. ā€œWhat do you believe should be of ultimate concern in life?ā€ . Answering this question is what ā€œreligionā€ is about, and until relatively recently in human history, asking someone how important it is would have been nonsensical.

If we want to optimize our relationship with technology, we need a more balanced conversation. Our research at the Human Flourishing Lab helps shed light on the positive dimensions of technology use that are often overshadowed in public discourse.

Both of these movies came out in 1986, and they feel spiritually related in a way that Fight Club and The Matrix both coming out in 1999 felt related. I think Highlander could get rebooted today and work as a kind of John Wick-styled, post-ironic nod to the original.
