...It has become clearer to me that instead of expecting students to take a couple years of language to check "that box", we need to support our students in developing a level of functional proficiency so they can reap the benefits of knowing a second (or third) language.

...or be able to communicate in less commonly taught languages to advance security, or the most important, build bridges between peoples, we are way off the mark. This MLA report highlights the dangerous direction we are going in....
