ICYMI: I wrote a BOOK! 😲
B2B PR That Gets Results is available now - but who is it for? 🤔
✅ Small marketing teams (as small as a team of one)
✅ Small B2B companies (< 500 employees)
✅ PR/comms pros looking for a refresher or tips
✅ Anyone looking for *practical* PR advice
Today's PR tip: If someone is kind enough to include you in their article, podcast or blog post, you should share it on your social media channels, tagging and thanking them.
I often refer to it as “publicizing your PR.”
Why is this important?

When I'm honest with potential PR clients about not "guaranteeing" media coverage, I may lose some opportunities.
But I'd rather be truthful upfront than promising something NO ONE can guarantee.
Guaranteed coverage = paid media.
#PRTips
Dear PR clients:
With earned media, you don't typically get a chance to review a journalist's story before it's published.
If you want that type of control, you'll have to pay for an ad.

There is no peace as a freelancer. 😣
Either you're freaking out because you don't think you have enough work - or you're panicking about how you're going to get the work you do have done.
#freelancelife
Friend (also in comms) was just saying - "Well, of course, you're an overthinker. You work in PR - where you HAVE to think through every potential angle & outcome."
That tracks.
I have an announcement I'd like to share. I applied months ago to start a Twitter community for
#FreelanceChat
- and yesterday I got the green light! It is HAPPENING!
Drum roll, please - I wrote a BOOK! 🙌
"B2B PR That Gets Results" will be available via major retailers in Q1 of 2024.
It's long been a goal of mine to write a book so I'm pretty excited to be able to add "author" to my resume. 😊

Can't stress this enough - you never know who is seeing what you tweet.
Just got off the phone with someone who saw one of my tweets, thought I might be available & called me with a project.
"Your tweet prompted the call." ☺️
Not sure why everyone thinks securing earned media coverage is so hard.... for just $1,500, one can be featured in a cover story, "The 10 Empowering Business Women Leaders of 2023." 😒🙄
#PRScams
Once again, PR is NOT about who you know.
Just because you may have a relationship with a journalist, that does NOT mean they will automatically run your clients' news & stories.
The bottom line? It needs to be a compelling, timely story-that's a fit for their audience.

Preparing to be on a panel of PR/comms pros next week talking about ChatGPT and what it means for our profession.
I'd love to hear your top concerns/thoughts, fellow pros.
Rant: Please don't say anything takes "minutes."
I see people use terms like "PR in Minutes." "Marketing in Minutes." "SEO in Minutes." NO.
These things do not take minutes...well, OK, they take A LOT of minutes. Like hours. Weeks. Months. Years.
Just because I'm honest with potential

clients about not "guaranteeing" coverage-or that it might be tough to get them in the exact media they want right off the bat-I may lose some in the process. But I'd rather be truthful upfront than promise something no one can guarantee
Freelance observation: I see things starting to pick up again.
It got a little quiet there for a couple months (which wasn't all bad for me as it allowed me to catch my breath a bit) but now it seems like people are looking for help again.
Hoping this is a good sign for us all.
My son wants to study Journalism. It can be a little irritating when people assume all you can do with a Journalism degree is work in the news business (as in they believe news jobs are going away). Clear writing indicates clear thinking - which will ALWAYS be needed.
"They want quick wins." 😒
EVERYONE wants quick wins. Alas, that's not how PR (or marketing) really works.
Better to spend your $ on ads if you want something fast.
Freelancers should embrace other freelancers - even if they do similar work.
Why?
Because you can't do ALL the projects. And because other freelancers can be a great source of support in so many ways.

Thrilled to share that I've been invited to become a

Ambassador!
Or Grammbassador, if you will. 😊
As an Ambassador, I'll have the opportunity to connect with other pros passionate about Grammarly & share best practices for using it.
More to come!
So, Twitter is going to limit the number of DMs you can send (if you're not a Blue subscriber) - AND not allow you to send a DM to anyone who doesn't follow you. I know that some reporters invite you to pitch them via open DMs.
This is all just... bad.
Why is a press release always the go-to? I do believe there is a time and place for press releases - but always ask WHY.
WHY do you want to write a press release? What are you trying to accomplish?
Sometimes there are better ways to get your message out.

Potential PR client who says, "We know this isn't a quick fix - our expectations are that we have to stick with it for it a while" - is speaking my love language. 😍
Press sec. Psaki repeatedly pushes back on a reporter who claims "there's a growing perception that this is really just the third term of Pres. Obama."
"Who's saying that?"
The truth is - some companies aren't ready for PR.
They need to have their 💩 together - or at least be willing to allow you to help them in getting it together - before they can roll out an effective public relations program.
I can't say how much I appreciate a journalist who replies - even if to say, "This isn't a fit right now - but I will keep it in mind for future stories." 🙏🙌
How to help your freelance friends:
1) Keep them in mind for referrals when you learn of someone who could use their help
2) Follow them on social media. Share & like their posts
3) If you know their work, write a Google review or LinkedIn recommendation
What else, freelancers?
Daughter went on first job interview - and GOT THE JOB! She's so excited to have her first real part-time job (other than baby/pet sitting & tutoring). 😊😊😊
If you're invited to be part of something - a blog post or article, a podcast, a show - help the author/creator promote it.
I'm always amazed when people don't share, tagging & thanking that person.
If you're a PR freelancer/consultant looking for work right now, I recommend checking with agencies.
There seem to be A LOT of agencies needing help right now due to increased demand for their services. They can't hire fast enough to meet the demand.
#freelancePR
Reminder: good freelance talent can be hard to find.
As much as you are auditioning freelancers - we are also auditioning YOU as a client.
If you're disengaged, overly critical, ignore our input, are disorganized, pay late - we may decide to move on.
ICYMI, HARO exists no longer.

today: "...raise a glass to Help a Reporter Out this weekend. It changed the journalism & PR game forever & that's something I'm really, really proud of."
He SHOULD be proud-not sure there will ever be anything like it again. 🥂
An author working on a book about PR was just interviewing me about my career path. Heard myself repeatedly mention the importance of writing. What skill is important? Writing. What advice do you have? Work on your writing. What’s gonna be important in the future of PR? Writing.
Nothing like a little rejection to keep you humble.
Got turned down for a speaking opp - and for a project I really wanted.
It happens.
#OnwardAndUpward
No one wants to hear this but it needs to be said-media outreach/PR takes TIME.
If you talk to PR agencies or pros who AREN'T telling you this-they're not being upfront with you.
You may get lucky out of the gate-but if you don't-hang in there.
Consistency wins the race.
Subject line from a sales email this morning: "I tried to connect with you through many numbers of methods" - yes, you did. And, if I had wanted to connect with you through ANY of those methods, you certainly would've heard back from me by now. 😒
I know Twitter will never be the same - & that it may go away entirely - but I will be *forever* grateful for the friends I've made here. They make EVERY day better. 🙏🥰
So, yesterday I had a setback with PR efforts for a client. 😔
After throwing myself a little pity party, I dusted myself off and started back at it again.
It's not the setbacks - it's how you handle them.
Once again, I put off a task I was dreading.
When I tackled it today, it really wasn't that bad.
Lesson? That thing you've been putting off? Just get started.
Other consultants and agencies in your field _aren't_ your competition.
They can, in fact, be an excellent source of referrals and camaraderie.
#consultingtips
Myth that needs to go away: Other freelancers are your competition. Just the opposite, in fact.
I’ll never forget when I moved back to Columbus. I asked some local PR pros out for coffee. One responded, "Why would I meet with you? You’re my competition." 😧
Thinking about starting a list of

freelancers/consultants. Sometimes folks contact me needing help that falls outside my area of expertise, & I'd like to have a list of other PR pros to potentially refer them to. Reply if you'd like to be included.

You know how you sometimes have a gut feeling about something seeming weird and not right?
It often turns out that that thing is...weird and not right.
When someone asks me what the most important skill/quality in PR is, I often answer writing - but I think I may change my answer to - ethics.
Without ethics, there can be no trust. Without trust, we as PR pros haven't got much to build on.
I'm telling you, you _never_ know who is paying attention.
People get in touch out of the blue saying - "I've heard about you & your work for ages" - but I never knew until they got in touch.
Stay out there - & when a need that's a fit arises, you'll be top of mind.
One of the best things about freelancing is being able to rearrange your day on the fly.
Not feeling inspired at the moment? Move your workout earlier in the day.
Got a lot accomplished in the a.m. & want to take off early? Do it.
#FreelanceLife
Yes, I work with "boring" B2B companies - but - I don't find them boring at all. 😌
My manufacturing, industrial and tech clients are doing some pretty interesting stuff - and I LOVE to pitch it to trade publications & other media who are looking for good stories.
