2️⃣ TRENDS HIDE VARIABILITY: Fertility declines over the last 50 yrs are dramatic. But Africa still has 4.1 children per woman on average—& wide country-level variation (1.2 in Mauritius to 6 in Chad). Even in Asia & the Americas—with low average fertility—variability remains.🧵

1️⃣ LOWER FERTILITY IS COMMON: Nearly 2/3 of the world’s population now live in countries with below-replacement fertility. Over half the countries in the world fall into this category, including many in Europe, North America & East Asia—and also many in Latin America & Asia. 🧵
