The #Jaguars have drafted countless WRs over the last two decades in hopes of finding the next Jimmy Smith. Now, it seems like they finally have him in Brian Thomas Jr. I talked to @JimmySmithJags about BTJ's stardom 'Chasing Jimmy.' https://t.co/5SRIeRns1s

the olympics had 3x3 basketball and breakdancing so it's fine that flag is here and I'm more excited for the women's team cuz even though there are thriving women's tackle football leagues the nfl refuses to acknowledge them

the sport is relatively broken because all you have to do is run "989" and it's basically uncoverable. only way is to play cover 3 (3 deep 1 under lol) which leaves you vulnerable to every other concept you can think of and 989 can still work if the slot crosses the safety's face

db: this is where you need football iq, coverages are pretty fake so just gotta feel it out and jump certain routes you think are coming. being tall helps because there's no way to slow anyone down (no contact sport) so you have to match verticality

wr: tall and fast. again, because there's no nuance to route running you don't really need to be shifty or anything like that. the field is pretty narrow so vertical space becomes more important

in terms of the type of players i'd looking for- qb: most of the nfl guys can just sit in the pocket and win but with that said you'd want someone who is shifty to evade the rusher and then run a route off a double pass. double pass is the play action of flag so it's important

remember that at a basic level tackle football coverage is basically 7 coverage defenders vs 5 (usually 4) eligible receivers. flag is 4 vs 4 no matter what. if you don't think an NFL qb can figure that out after 2 practices idk what to tell you.

obviously, I'd still take all the NFL receivers but receiver is where you could probably get away from the current pool of players. at QB, it wouldn't take long for any pro QB (or college QB) to figure out coverages where the defense can never have a numerical advantage lol

when you think about the really great athletes at receiver who have failed in the nfl it's often because they don't know how to get off press or which break point tool to use at the right time. none of that is needed in flag. it's all speed breaks lol.

the one thing about flag that levels the playing field between the nfl players and the current pool at wr- is that you don't need any nuance in your route running. remember there's no press or cover 1 or anything that resembles a real coverage so just being an athlete is enough

Treash is the person I've worked with the most at PFF and while I won't miss him waking me up with his 5am slacks about arches or dagger or his quest to find a Lincoln Riley playbook he is undoubtedly one of my favorite people I've ever met and I'll miss our friendship. 🛴
