This is a win thanks to the brave folks we represented in our 2020 lawsuit with @PA_ILP against ACJ. It also wouldn't have been possible without the persistent work of our community organizer @tanishaevonne, our allies & the activists who fought to hold ACJ accountable.

Today, ALC attorney Bret Grote argued to the PA Supreme Court that mandatory life without parole sentences for 2nd-degree murder are a cruel punishment of people who didn't actually kill anyone, and should be struck down as unconstitutional. @triblive: https://t.co/TeU3o9xVCI

Congratulations to @PA_ILP on its successful appeal on behalf of a Roy Lee Williams, who spent 26 years in solitary confinement. The appeals court held that Williams is entitled to file suit against prison officials for alleged cruel & unusual punishment.

β€œI personally find it inspiring,” Feldman said of Williams and others who drafted the initial suits on their own. "They had the ingenuity to file these cases and craft compelling legal arguments. And I guess they had faith that they could vindicate their rights in court.”

According to Feldman, about 5% of the state's prison population is in solitary confinement. He said that about half of that group β€” compared to one-third of the overall prison population β€” have a history of mental illness.

β€œHis is the first to go up on appeal. So I think this opinion definitely will help all those other men whose cases are currently pending in trial courts right now,” said Matthew Feldman, a supervising attorney with the group.
