Meaningful conversations and learning happen when people communicate in a language they all understand. This got us thinking about what language justice looks like in our work and daily lives.

We brainstormed what language justice really means, how we can promote it, and how we, as individuals, can advocate for everyone's right to communicate in their preferred language.

We at Overseas Interpreting are excited to have picked up some cultural tips from Douglas that will come in handy if any of us plans to visit Nigeria for interpreting work or a tour. Thanks for sharing the enlightening experiences, Douglas!.

Douglas also familiarized us with the basic concept of “deafglish” they use in their daily interactions. During the session, we even learned about “garri” a food that many Nigerians regard as “grocery.” It was eye-opening!.

At our office in Valencia, we had a fun session recently with Douglas taking us on a journey into the culture of the Nigerian deaf community and Nigeria in general. It was interesting to learn about the vernaculars used by the Nigerian deaf community.
