Historically, it was called Gopadri, and in Persian and local lore, the hill is known as Takht-e-Sulaiman (Throne of Solomon). The temple has undergone several renovations over the centuries, including restoration by King Gulab Singh of the Dogra dynasty in the 19th century.

Though the current structure dates back to around the 9th century CE, it is believed that the original temple or shrine could date back as early as 200 BCE during the reign of King Ashoka or his son Jaluka.

The temple is built from massive stone blocks and features a circular sanctum topped with a large domed roof, which is quite unique compared to typical north Indian temple spires.

The temple is named after the great philosopher and saint Adi Shankaracharya, who is believed to have visited the site in the 8th century CE and meditated there. After his visit, the temple became associated with his name.

Every year, on Jyeshtha Ashtami (usually in May or June), thousands of devotees, especially displaced Kashmiri Pandits, visit the temple to participate in this important religious gathering.

Locals interpret these color changes as an indication of the goddess’s mood or as omens. The temple has been mentioned in Kalhana’s Rajatarangini, a 12th-century chronicle of Kashmir’s history, highlighting its long-standing religious importance.

Ragnya Devi temple also called as Kheer Bhawani in Tulmulla, Ganderbal, one of the most important temples for pandits. This temple is dedicated to goddess Ragnya Devi that is built on a sacred hexagonal spring, and the water of this spring is known to mysteriously change color.
