Our legal aid system has been under pressure for a long time - it needs emergency first aid as the new @nzlawsociety research shows
stuff.co.nz
A survey of legal aid lawyers has found the system is at crisis point, with a quarter planning to reduce their workload or get out altogether.

"the system is working for the consumers for whom it was initially built—that’s just not most of the country today." - one of many great insights in this interview with @IAALS's Natalie Anne Knowlton. Also, advice to lawyers on A2J: "get mad, I’d say get scrappy, get creative"
"We can conduct and consult empirical research all day, but the #B2C and #B2B2C legal #startups are the ones that take the #A2J conversation from concept to reality. As a community we don’t lean on these resources enough, and I intend to change that." https://t.co/A57pCRjit3

🎉🥳This HC Rules amendment gives clarity and flexibility to litigants-in-person who want limited support from a lawyer. We’ve advocated for this for several years with @NZlawsociety, which has issued updated guidance following the change. An #A2J win!

The Act's purposes extend "to addressing the inherent power imbalance..b/w employers and employees. The imbalance of power is often (though not always) characterised by an imbalance in financial power which manifests in disparate levels of access to legal services and resources."

"In my view the work of Community Law Centres and lawyers acting on a pro bono basis in this jurisdiction is indispensable for ensuring that the underlying purposes of the statute are met, incl that those in the most vulnerable position have access to the Employment Court.."

Another good development for pro bono, from the Employment Court: “the Court may order costs in circumstances where a party has been represented on a pro bono basis”. Community Law represented the employee. Great move to encourage pro bono representation!

If it doesn't make it through Parliament before it dissolves, we hope to see it rise again in the new Parliament

We're happy to see this drawn from the Members' Bills Biscuit Tin. Our pro bono report recommended in-house lawyers be allowed to offer pro bono to the public as they are around 1/4 of the legal workforce.
