One of the best bits of my job is that I get to see lots of the continent. It wouldn’t be such a rare privilege if it weren’t such a PAIN to fly around Africa. Hear me whinge in this week’s issue of @TheEconomist .

I find myself oscillating between being really fascinated by how AI is shaping the world, and being way too scared to read anything else about it 🫠 .I felt both, multiple times, reading this week's cover package 😭

hospitals quite a lot. Surely that would have gone down better than this? Quality of care, quality of personnel, especially in the best hospitals in Nigeria is not the problem. Our doctors are renowned worldwide for a reason and I hate when people speak like this.

A better spokesperson might have at least said the former president didn’t want to burden Nigeria’s already overburdened healthcare sector. We don’t have enough doctors and having even as few as 5 working to keep him alive would have come at great cost to some of our specialist.

and to be honest that probably would have pissed people off for other reasons but it would have been the best possible signal to send as someone who was constantly banging on about the importance of patronising local industry. Those things matter.

My issue with this is not even just that it’s not patriotic or whatever. It’s just not true. Nigeria has brilliant doctors and the very best of them would have been brought to the state house to do whatever was needed to treat him.
