An increase in European defence spending is driving flows in Rheinmetall, while the energy transition and AI build-out benefits names like Siemens and Schneider Electric. Meanwhile, volumes in puts and longer-dated expiries remain broadly in line with last year.

"We're seeing investors using shorter-dated options as a way to get upside exposure to European names across a number of sectors, including defence, energy and chemicals," says Thomas Fielden, trader at Optiver.

Traders are piling into single stock #options this year, driving European block trade volumes up 45%. Growth is coming from outright calls and call-spreads, especially contracts with less than three months to expiry.
