Ethylene is a chemical released by produce to start the ripening process. However, it can also cause products to have a shorter shelf life and eventually be wasted. By controlling ethylene, shelf life can be extended.

You may be able to check your temperature to see if you have a cold, but sadly that doesn't apply to fresh produce. However, integrating temperature data with spectroscopy data can help to predict shelf life and understand how long something will be fresh for!
