Psalm 23 is one of the most misunderstood chapters in the Bible. I’ve spent 12 years as a missionary and Bible teacher, and I’ve seen it over and over again. It’s not just about comfort—it’s about war. It’s not a warm blanket—it’s a battle cry. Here’s what most people miss:

If I wrote the Bible, I'd scrub this out. But God left it in. Not as an embarrassment, but as a reminder: His grace doesn’t run from the mess. It runs straight through it.

Tamar gives birth to twins. And from Perez, the son of scandal, comes King David. And from David… Jesus. The Messiah’s family tree runs straight through this mess.

Judah’s face goes white. He says the line that flips the whole chapter: “She is more righteous than I.”

But Tamar sends a message. She doesn’t say a word. Just sends the seal, the cord, and the staff. “These belong to the man who made me pregnant.”

The hypocrisy is thick. The man who abandoned her, used her, and slept with her… is now ready to kill her for doing what he did.

A few months later, the news spreads: “Tamar is pregnant by immorality.” Judah is furious. “Bring her out. Burn her.”

Judah sees her. Doesn’t recognize her. Sleeps with her. He doesn’t have payment, so he leaves his seal, his cord, and his staff as a pledge.

Judah would rather Tamar rot as a forgotten widow than risk another son. So Tamar makes a plan. She disguises herself as a prostitute… and waits.

Two dead husbands. No children. Tamar is left barren and disgraced. Judah promises her his youngest son, Shelah. But he’s lying. He never planned to give him to her.

Then came Onan. His job was to give Tamar children in his brother’s name. Instead, he used her. Slept with her. Made sure she’d never conceive. God struck him dead too.

Judah had three sons. Tamar married the first, Er. But he was wicked. God struck him dead.

Genesis 38 reads like it doesn’t belong in the Bible. It’s ugly. It’s scandalous. And it’s right in the middle of God’s plan.

Wait… there’s a prostitute in Jesus’ bloodline? And God didn’t hide her story. He put it on page one of the New Testament. 🧵🪡
