Starting to feel overwhelmed by how many messages of support I've had since I came back here 🥲 I'm glad to be back spreading the message that Freud was in fact extremely cool, and that you should never ever write off psychoanalysis as a clinical method

It's as though some people don't realise that psychoanalysis is meta-psychology

"The term unconscious...designates not latent ideas in general, but especially ideas with a certain dynamic character, ideas keeping apart from consciousness in spite of their intensity and activity." Sigmund Freud, 'A Note on the Unconscious'

To Freud, the mind is active, it is dynamic - we are not passive recipients of external and internal stimuli - our mind works dynamically to construct the reality that we live in

'To interpret and to imagine one understands are not at all the same things. It is precisely the opposite. I would go so far as to say that it is on the basis of a kind of refusal of understanding that we push open the door to analytic understanding."

Loved a CPD event tonight with the psychoanalyst, Stephen Grosz. I'll have to read his new book, where one of the things he talks about is the "ecstasy of sanctimony" when we derive pleasure in blaming others, while avoiding looking at ourselves

Sigmund Freud and his beautiful writing: "Every psychoanalytic treatment is an attempt at liberating repressed love which has found a meagre outlet in the compromise of a symptom."

So sad to hear that American psychoanalyst and philosopher, Jonathan Lear, has passed away. I just loved his writing and serious engagement with psychoanalysis and its intersection with philosophy. His 'Freud' book is a must read. RIP.

My current energy: "I am reading six books at once, the only way of reading; since, as you will agree, one book is only a single unaccompanied note, and to get the full sound, one needs ten others at the same time." Virginia Woolf

His texts on groups and civilisation are well worth reading (even if you completely disagree with them) as they are one man's attempt to make sense of senselessness
