Building Distributed Validators for Ethereum. CTO @dv_labs. Pronounced 'Ush-sheen'. 🇵🇸🇱🇧🍉
Joined April 2008
As Ethereum moves away from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake, we cannot take its decentralisation for granted. We need decentralisation in depth, and we at @ObolNetwork are enabling the next frontier of decentralised network validation. https://t.co/Ixgz76tjpZ

In 2018 I feared Proof of Stake wouldn't be as decentralised as Proof of Work. In 2022 I'm doing something about it.

This week marks 3 years since we deployed the first distributed validator on mainnet. In that time we have gone from one validator to being run by almost all of the largest staking protocols and node operators on the chain. I want Ethereum to be decentralised. To achieve that;

If you’re celebrating Christmas this week, please take a moment to consider what a modern day Palestinian new mother is enduring. Forced relocation, starvation, bombing, hypothermia, a destroyed healthcare system; all at the hands of a foreign empire intent on her and her child’s

This is a valuable test for the legitimacy of an Ethereum wallet. The results in the thread are disappointing. We’re building the Obol Stack, to make it easier to run your own node and to take back control of your crypto. I hope a year from now all these wallets work locally.
Wallets let you use your own Ethereum node for interacting with mainnet. This is great! This way, you no longer rely on the wallet's default (centralized) service. It's essential for the walkaway test. But... do wallets 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬 in this mode? Let's find out. 👇

The amount of work the Obol team have put in this year has been astounding. New products Second client implementation Many partnerships Grants programs Industry leading reports Lido curated set + csm adoption Nation states running DVs 3x TVL growth And so much more. I’m proud.
2025 was our biggest year ever and it’s not even particularly close. Here were our key milestones (mega-thread incoming) 🧵

South Korea lives in the future. This report into their use of Ethereum is extremely well researched and comprehensive. Please take a moment to check it out if you want to see how a tech forward culture is adopting the tech. Guess the #1 smart contract before you look (p. 32)
Obol and @dsrvlabs present a collaborative report on the State of Ethereum in South Korea. A deep dive into one of Ethereum’s most unique local scenes featuring the key voices pushing it forward. As we discovered, the South Korean community is ready to build the future 🇰🇷🌱

Happy hard fork day to all who celebrate. May your nodes be up to date and following the right chain. 🎄

Ethereum should protocolise a price to exit a validator if it wants to stay decentralised
Staking is one of the most popular ways people passively earn on their crypto. But you have to wait to unstake your assets which can take weeks for some protocols. So our team built the solution: instant unstaking. It’s an optional way to bypass protocol wait times and access

We’ve shipped a lot of great work this year, I’m very grateful for our team and our partners’ efforts to make Ethereum more secure and decentralised by adopting distributed validators to secure their stake.

12 minutes where I lay out the state of Eth staking, its challenges, and Obol’s plans to grow the Ethereum economy with the Obol Stack Probably one of the most info dense interviews I’ve given in the last year if you’re going to listen to my dulcet Irish accent just occasionally
“The goal [of the Obol Stack] is to reduce the friction for running decentralized software. If you can reduce the friction for developers and node operators, you can unlock more economic activity.” — @OisinKyne discusses the Obol Stack in an interview with @StakingSummit 👀

More and more institutional staking services are offering multi-operator distributed validator setups. This may be Obol and Ethereum’s first state running validators for the chain, and they’ve selected fantastic partners to do so with @BitcoinSuisseAG and @solsticestaking
Liechtenstein Trust Integrity Network is now using Obol to stake in collaboration with Solstice Staking and Bitcoin Suisse Sovereign-approved, institutional-grade operators are joining the staking end game.

That said; the stack is still in alpha, and these might not all work out of the box just yet. Bug reports and feature requests are super welcome. :)

Helm is for running enterprise-grade software at scale. The Obol Stack is built to use it. This allows us to leverage the great work the ethPandaOps team have done building and maintaining charts for key eth infra. Clients, explorers, monitoring, automation, load balancers, etc.
Ethereum Helm Charts are coming to the Obol Stack courtesy of @ethPandaOps 🐼 We’re building a foundation that will help power the entire Ethereum ecosystem.

The inaugural EVA event this week was very encouraging. It was great to see the EF speaking and listening to validators about the challenges of running the network. While not everyone at the event favoured the same actions, it was apparent that everyone wants what’s best for
Ethereum runs on the backs of folks who stake their own ETH, keep their machines humming, and carry all the risk so the rest of the world can build. Nobody ever gave them a seat at the table so we made one. It’s called the Ethereum Validators Association.

The @ethStaker gathering is such a wholesome get together. Ethereum’s teams most dedicated to keeping the chain decentralised; all sharing knowledge, products, and best practices with one another and having a few drinks together afterwards. Already looking forward to the next one
Staking Gathering was one of Devconnect’s standout events and Obol had big representation with two onstage appearances from our team: ⧫ “Powering Ethereum: Self Sovereignty in a World of Service Providers” w/ @OisinKyne ⧫ “Correlated Failures and Network Impact” w/ Kody Sale

.@Koenmtb1 graciously helping @DV_Labs go live as an @aztecnetwork sequencer using the Obol Stack 👀 Testing in prod with skin in the game is the best way to use your own products. If you won’t put your own money on your product, you shouldn’t be asking your customers to.

“Ethereum is designed to be a world computer that anyone can interact with. I believe anyone should be able to *run* the computer and that’s what we’re hoping to achieve with the Obol Stack.” — @OisinKyne outlines our vision for the Obol Stack on @EFDevcon’s Lightning stage

@OisinKyne from @Obol_Collective talking about how we’ve lost the dream of disintermediation, and the obol stack is working on bringing all the tooling back home! built on kubernetes, helm, and ethereum-helm-charts. really cool!
